If this card is to be hard launched in the next 3-4 weeks, we'd be hearing a lot more about it. The AIB's would have their cards being made and with so many AIB's it'd be very hard to keep it under wraps this close to the supposed launch.

True, but Nvidia did a pretty good job keeping their 7800 series under wraps before it came out.

Just to comment on the whole AA thing - AA largely depends on the video memory configuration, bandwidth, and the mem controller itself. In almost every benchmark adding AA has so far shifted the balance in Ati's favor, even with NV's higher memory clocks. I'm not expecting Nv to redesign the memory controller for the refresh, but this is something that adding more pipes will not remedy. It would be interesting to see what improvements the 7900 has in that department.

True. I hope this card is launched sooner than later. Either the 7900 flagship or the Ati response will be my last DX9 card until Vista arrives.

Yeah, it always seems as though NV's cards have been taking much bigger of a performance hit with AA than comparable ATI cards, and it will be interesting to see how (or if) they will correct this. Also, a 7900GT that would offer a good blend of price and performance would be nice, as not everyone wants or can afford a $500+ extreme card (7900GTX or Ultra, X1900XT[X]).

I'd like to see some benchmarks soon. I also wish i had some insider info with the game programmers to see whether they think shader power or texture power will be emphasized in upcoming games. Kinda of weird that ATI and Nvidia decided on such different paths that way.

looks like my hope came true:
http://www.techreport.com/

it is being reported that the 7900GT will be a 24 pipe chip just like the 7900GTX, just clocked a lot lower. hurrah.

i hate paying for what is often disabled technology.

does this news tally with the anandtech consensus?

No one who knows Nvidia is surprised. They simply prefer to stay within the same performance range as ATI and hold back anything faster until needed.

It is always a let down for some when a company allows, maybe even originates, rumors of much higher spec cards being released to keep people from buying ATI until the release date was so close people might as well wait.

The 7900GTx looks to be pretty much equal to a X1900XT in both price and performance, with ATI beating it in future shader heavy games like Oblivion and maybe only FEAR currently while the 7900GTx winning slightly in most current games in all out speed unless AA is taken up to 16X. Either card would be good, and the 7900 will probably be quieter and less of a power hog.

The big loser will be the $250 range. The 7900GT will not be much better then a $250 EVGA 7800GT (with mail in rebate) that's OCed out of the box and can be OCed more to past GTx levels. The 7900GT will have a better OC capability, but it will sell for a long time at over $350. Expect the 7800GT to drop in price for a little while after the 7900GT is out then go back up to over $300 as stock runs out.

The battle for the top video card has been very entertaining and going back and forth left and right now.
