X2 is overkill for me I think. with the current bundle of craptastic games anyway. I just need something that'll get me over the hump.

you don't need a 1GB 4870 for thoes games , a 4850 or 4870 512mb will do fine for thoes title.

Should be coming real soon now, hopefully with Cat 8.8's ~

1GB helps a lot for people with 24" or 30" LCDs in high resolutions when they use high detail textures and high AA settings.
There's a graph somewhere on one of the review sites that shows a bunch of games exceeding 512MB VRAM usage under these conditions, and many even somewhat exceeding the 768MB of an 8800GTX.
IMHO the current generation of games' texture usages is artificially limited mainly by the fact that a lot of people have 512MB GPUs; it is not that expensive anymore to get a 24"/30" LCD compared to 3 years ago, so it is not an uncommon case to play in 1920x1200 or 2560x1200 or whatever with AA + high detail textures on. It would be trivial to expect games to bump up the texture quality as more people get 1GB cards, or even before that just as the "very high" option for those few that can run it.

when they MAKE the textures, they can scan them in at w/e res they want, I don't think it's more work. Its a slight matter of space limitation "compression".
JUST making sure, the 4870 can be used to decode h264 mkv files with like MPC, or vlc right?

I'm will be buying a HD4870 1GB this week. Will be ordering it on Thursday. I could get it now but I'm ordering all my PC upgrades in one day so I can get a VIP discount and combo deals to get everything cheaper.
The 1GB HD4870 has been in Australia for a few days now. But they are selling for $370. I might contact them tomorrow and see how much they are selling the Ge Cube HD4870 1GB as they have just arrived in store and Ge Cube seem to be cheaper than the rest of the brands.
Sorry but what has that got to do with my post?Originally posted by: Calculator83As long as the warrenty is the same length and quality,, 20mhz is not going to make the difference.
