Any news at all on a mac mini?

I already have two reasonably high end monitors so I don't need nor want the imac. Was hoping for a generation 8 (coffee lake) or zen based mac mini but as it stands they are still offering a haswell based dual core which is just ridiculous.

Nothing yet. As I understand, Apple recently said it was still committed to the Mac mini, but just what that entails isn't clear. My hunch is that Apple is likely taking the same fresh look as it is with the Mac Pro, but it's not going to be some radical rethink. I suspect we'd all be happy if Apple just tucked in some Coffee Lake CPUs and other modern accoutrements (USB-C would be virtually guaranteed) and called it a day.

Come to think of it, it's rather interesting that Intel recently released those 8th-gen Core i5 and i7 chips with built-in AMD Vega graphics. Wouldn't it be great if the Mac mini used those? If the price was right, you'd have an 'entry' Mac that could handle some light gaming.

Wait until WWDC (June 4)...

...and prepare to be disappointed yet again.

Thanks. I guess I will wait to June but I don't expect much. I just don't get it.

I have a late 2013 13" MB Pro which still works quite well as a laptop. But sometimes I want to use it with an external monitor and it is there where it shows its age. It simply cannot do 4K or 1440p widescreen.

That machine can indeed do 1440p on an external monitor.

No 4K though.

I honestly don't know what they're going to offer that will be an amazing draw to get me back to OSX. I had a lot of fun with my Cube, Macbook(s), Mini (mine), iMac (hers), and Hackintosh setups over the years, and my wife still runs OSX for her photo business, but I've migrated my personal computer to a Chromebook & do all of my video editing (mostly Premiere & daVinci, both of which are cross-platform) & gaming (Steam, mostly VR) on Windows 10. I mean, maybe they'll knock it out of the park, who knows, but outside of the endless updates (and random spying stuff) on Windows 10, it's been surprisingly solid. I still like OSX better, but Windows 10 is a bit less of a hassle because I can use any computer hardware I want, I can run a 1080 Ti, and everything that I personally use is either cross-platform or has good equivalents in the Windows world. BOY do I hate to say that lol, as I'm a huge Apple fanboy, but it seemed like all progress stopped when Jobs died, and it feels like too little, too late. I mean, I wouldn't say no to a pimped-out 18-core iMac Pro if they were giving them out, but we've kind of hit a point software-wise & hardware-wise where things are pretty dang good on both ecosystems.

PS - I miss our Cube forum, are you still active on it at all?

I didn't even know that forum was still around. I long ago retired my two Cubes, as well as my other PowerPC Macs. They sit on shelves on display in my man cave. ;)

My signature describes some of them, but I keep 6 Macs around the house in active use, sort of:

2017 12" MacBook 16 GB
2009 13" aluminum MacBook Pro 8 GB, with patched High Sierra
2008 13" aluminum MacBook 8 GB, with patched High Sierra
2008 13 polycarbonate MacBook 4 GB, with Ubuntu 17.10
2017 27" i5 iMac 5K
2010 27" i7 iMac, but just used as an external monitor for the 2017 iMac

I held onto my Cube for a long time, but I moved into a smaller rental & it had to go. Someday I'll get another one for display purposes, haha!

We just have our circa-2011 Hackintosh now, that it's! I've replaced the boot drive (more storage) & GPU (failed), but other than that, it just won't die lol. I'd love to replace it with a small, sleek Mac Mini at some point...we'll see what Apple comes out with next month!

My 2012 can do 4k24hz XD

At this point I want a new Mac Mini too. I love making Hackintoshes, but for the average user that is a nightmare to update. What price ranges would be expected? Can Apple hit under $600 for base model?
