It is not part of the Microsoft DirectX9.0c specification. It is an IHV specific hardware feature, that just happended to be introduced at the same time as Shader Model 3.0.

Josh, you are mixig up FP16 pixel shader precision, in place since DX9.0 and continues on in DX9.0c with FP16 rendering. Two completely different beasts.

Alright, my question is specifically about the FP16 HDR implementation that was a highly touted feature of SM3, especially for FarCry. It took a massive performance hit...but was still a highly touted feature.

FP16 HDR was not and is not part of SM3.0...

But you do need a SM 3.0 capable card to do it right?

Yes but that's only a coincidence.

To do FP HDR you need a GPU that can render to a floating-point frame buffer and it just so happens the only cards that can do this also have SM 3.0.

FP HDR is not part of any current DirectX spec.

Thanks for the clarification, I changed my post to reflect that.
