Its entirely instances. You leave the central cities, and you are in an instance. No one else can enter the instance, save for your group. The Arenas are the exeption to this, everybody goes there.

PvP MMOs seem to cater to a different crowd. I work with people who play WoW, an MMORPG, on an RP server, then go out of there way to not RP, call RPers wimps/losers/idiots/etc, the bitch/moan/complain themselves when Blizzard retaliates. :p

PvP focused gamers tend to not care about visuals, storyline, quests, plot, or RP. Again, one of the people from above just started a Shadowbane account and was raving to me about it. 'No quests, No story, no RPing, everybody just goes and kills each other! Its awesome!' His exact words.

If all you wan to to do is jump into a game at max level, where every character is an equal contender, and kill other people, then you'd be better of playing CS or another FPS. Instant gratification should never be the focus of an MMORPG. In GW, you can create a PvP character right off the bat, at max level. How many people just go create a max character to jump into PvP? In WoW, if you are in Alterac Valley BG, for example, you can be relatively certain that the people playing level 60 characters know how to play their max level character. You can't get to max level in WoW without knowing how to play your character. The same holds true for all true MMOs.

Well the lone wolf style is valid only when it's a choice...

Huh? I wasn't asking about the validity, just why would anybody want to be a 'lone wolf' (if that's the euphemism you want to use) in a game meant to be played with other people.
Cause people are annoying sometimes? My point is that other people being "around" allows people to truly play out a lone wolf style character. In a solo game you have no choice but to be alone...see what i'm saying?

Again, what is the appeal in being the 'lone wolf'. So you join a MMOG game so you can play alone?

How about a player who doesn't like to group with others but does like to discuss tactics and equipment/trade with/etcetcetc. There's more to the genre than "group-based level grinding" as HoP put it.

Sounds like what you need to do is find things called 'forums' and 'chat rooms'.

Really though, i know whys ome people solo, i solo most of the time these days. It was just in response to HeroOfPellinor who 'never understand people who love the group-based level grind'.

Drugs r bad mmkay?

MMOs r bad mmkay?

[rant]
They are designed with 1 thing in mind - keeping the players playing so they keep shelling out the monies. If you aren't addicted within a week, they failed.

It's always the same. Kill monsters for months on end so you can level up. Why do you level up? So you can kill "cooler" monsters and get "cooler" items.

There is no final victory, no true feeling of completion. If there was, they would lose money because you stop paying.

So, 2-3 years after you finally pry your credit card out of their hands, you really have nothing to show for it except a fat ass.

Grats!

Why can't they make these games better? It would be so much more fun and gratifying to me if I could play it and by the time I reach level 50 (NOT through level grind), I've beaten the game and finished the story.

Why can't they make them how they are suppose to be? Mimic a single player RPG, but with the MMO part. They can't because they don't want to. If they did, they would suck less money and life out of your poor soul.

oh and I'd like to say that while many people don't call GW an MMO, I wish all MMO games were designed more like that. I just wish GW had real dungeon feeling dungeons.. Everything is outdoors in that game.

I played it with hundreds of different people, and I completed it after a couple months. The only reason people don't call it an MMO is because it does not take years of so called "gameplay" to complete (never happens anyways) and does not make you pay money to play a game you already purchased.

You don't get what we're saying Looney, but that's cool :)

Soloing does not mean being anti-social, maybe that's where you're getting confused?
Playing an mmo doesn't replace social interaction, it IS social interaction, or rather merely a facet of what communication between humans is all about. It's so popular and fun for precisely that reason.

MMOs are cool because they allow for a wide range of different interactive possibilities and playing solo is just another way to be a member of whatever world you're a part of.

And when i said talk, i mean talk about the game, hell even roleplay your character! :D

I love to RP and i play on RP servers in EQ2 and would play on one in WoW if my friends in RL were not all on PvP servers. I cannot stand it when people join RP servers and not RP. They join servers with names like Omgwtfbbqpwn and then make fun of everyone that trys to RP on an RP server. I dont understand why they join an RP server in the first place, they would be at home on a normal server, but no, they join the RP server and ruin the game for everyone.

BTW, Bateluer, nice job on your points on GW and PvP in general, I agree with you.

And how do they do this? By injecting you with chemicals through your keyboard to make you dependent? Do you call your subscription to cable TV as being 'addicted' to it because you resubscribe each month?

It's always the same. Kill monsters for months on end so you can level up. Why do you level up? So you can kill "cooler" monsters and get "cooler" items.

Why do you go around killing other players constantly on a limited amount of maps? Why do people buy a big picture that's been broken up into pieces, to just put the pieces back together again? See how stupid it sounds when you list something superficially? That's how stupid you yourself sound.

There is no final victory, no true feeling of completion. If there was, they would lose money because you stop paying.

And your point? These games are not meant to have a finish line or final score.

How about some entertainment for those that enjoyed it?

They have, it's called Guild Wars. If you haven't heard of it, try a google search.

Why can't they make them how they are suppose to be? Mimic a single player RPG, but with the MMO part. They can't because they don't want to. If they did, they would suck less money out of your poor soul.

Because these games are suppose to be a persistent world. How persistent will a world be if everyone leaves in a month or two? The appeal to me with MMOGs is that there is no 'ending' to it. MMOGs are by nature unending. Nobody is forcing you to play the game, if you don't want to, don't. If you get bored of it, click on the Cancel button.

Just like porn, different genres are going to appeal to people differently... just because it doesn't appeal to you, doesn't mean it's wrong. I like watching straight sex and lesbian porn... and just because you like transexual stuff, that doesn't mean there's something wrong with the stuff i watch. It doesn't mean that just because the stuff i watch lacks 'girls' with penises, that it's not entertaining to me.

How is the content additions in guild wars or do they add a good deal content nearly every month like WoW and EQ2?

Here is an example of just some of the content that gets added reguarly in EQ2, this is the kind of stuff that the monthly fee pays for. Same with WoW.

Are you going to buy the expansions? Because if you do, that's going to be another $30 every 6 months or so. Personally i would rather pay $15/mo subscription and get 10 or 200 hours of entertainment out of it, then buying the expansion for $30 and finishing it in 10 hours.

Those are the only two options? Group grind or solo?

UO didn't even have any form of grouping at all and there was 100X more interraction in that game than in any other game I've played.

All these arguments sound like they are from people currently playing MMO's. It's like arguing with someone who smokes or does drugs and claims they aren't addicted and can stop whenever they want. Pointless.

Why do you go around killing other players constantly on a limited amount of maps? Why do people buy a big picture that's been broken up into pieces, to just put the pieces back together again?

Because in both of those situations, you either win or lose. The round is eventually over and you have either won or lost. The puzzle is eventually finished. Satisfying.

Because these games are suppose to be a persistent world. How persistent will a world be if everyone leaves in a month or two?

Hey, if you want to live in a fake world for a few years instead of experiencing other things, including a wide variety of games, that is your choice. How frequently you turn down doing things with family, friends, and school because you have to kill da big dragon with da loot you gots to have to be elite - thats up to you.

They consume you. Heaven forbid you stop playing for a weekend to go camping with friends, especially when your guild is doing a raid for this that and the other and you'll miss out and possibly even be left behind for futher events.

Some people have control over it, others don't but think they do. One of the biggest problems with a lot of these games is that the requirements to fully enjoy them usually involve sspending 5+ hours at it each day to be successful.

LOL right, can't argue effectively, so you're going to take the coward's way out and say it's because it's not possible to.

And who are you to tell people how they should spend their time?

Clearly your read the rest of my comments and arguments about why I think MMOs are unhealthy considering you quoted them.

And who are you to tell people how they should spend their time?

heh, I'm not telling you how you should spend your time. Note the "that is your choice" part of my paragraph. I merely am pointing out the problems I see in them.

Has your mommy or significant other been bitching at you lately or something for playing so much? So defensive haha.

I've talked to more people IRL that say they wished they never got so addicted to such and such MMORPG, but that's probably because the rest are too busy leveling up to talk to people IRL.

You can get married in a few MMO games though. So as long as you can type with one hand, and don't mind knowing that the other person could potentially really be a guy, you are set.

Obviously you are, since you seem to think people who are playing them shouldn't be.

LOL sounds like somebody didn't have the will power to control their obsession with the game, and now speaks of all the evils of it. They're not only trying to convince others, but to convince themselves as well.

I've talked to more people IRL that say they wished they never got so addicted to such and such MMORPG, but that's probably because the rest are too busy leveling up to talk to people IRL.

You don't hear about all the other people who play these games without any problems, is because there are no problems with them. People only pay attention to things that are abnormal, because it's the abnormal things that are interesting. So they ignore all the other 'non-event' things, and there's a bias towards what is abnormal.

Yes, i've known people who are a little too obessive with the games... but i also know workaholics, people who spend way too much time watching reality TV or sports, people who spend an inordinate amount of their money on their cars, people who are much too obsessive about women, etc etc

Just because you can't control yourself in these types of games, doesn't mean nobody can.

Good work. Glad you agree with me. Some people can smoke pot just once and never again, others can't get enough. Does not mean it's an ok thing for people to do.

MMO's are addictive by design - far far more than any other game. Except maybe CS apparently hah.

I heard there is this really good MMO game already out, strangely enough it's not played on a PC. It has really realistic graphics too, almost as good as HL2. I forget what it's called though.

Real life is its name. Only permadeath PvP servers are available tho, tried contacting the GM about this but no response yet about a possible non permadeath server. Has great graphics, perfect physics engine, horrible gameplay and replayability, think the sims here. Your character is only allowed about 70 years play time before the account expires. Maintenance occurs about every day for about 8 hours, horrible IT staff even worse than blizzard to have 8 hours of downtime a day, at which time you are unable to play. It is overrated, races are imbalanced as well as the differant classes, i keep trying to get them to nerf the amount i have to pay in medical bills due to playing it.

Seriously, people, why cant we stop playing mmos and just do like normal americans and sit our asses down and watch TV all day untill it is time to go back to work? Cable only costs about $40 more a month and provides less social interaction than MMOs.
