I am looking foward to Vanguard, but that is still a long ways off. Are there any ones that look good that are a bit closer to release than Vanguard?

http://mmorpg.com

I have applied to beta test Dark and Light, Dungeons & Dragons Online, Lord of the Rings Online, Roma Victor and Auto Assault.

And Star Trek online and as you said Vanguard but those 2 have not yet started to take beta applications.

Vanguard? I'll never understand people who love the group-based level grind.

The ONLY mmorpg announced that's worth a look is Darkfall Online. Should be the greatest mmorpg ever if they stay true to their vision....which it looks like they're committed to doing since they're taking their own sweet time.

I expect some surprise announcements by the end of the year though. Some franchises have just been too quiet.

The best MMO would be one where the lowest level was 1 and the highest level was 1 ... no levels .. You have like 5 classes (different mages and warriors) and it takes like 3 hours of gameplay to get all your shyte.. its constant PvP Zones and no guards (unless your faction or guild owns an area or something, but it wouldnt be uber hard guards)..

Basically old-school UO, except cutting all the time it takes to do that. And better graphics/spells, etc etc

:p

MMORPG =Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game :p

The whole point is kinda to play with other people.

Having said that, Vanguard definitely looks like it will be worth it, but its still pretty far off. :(

3 hrs huh? Better give up this pipedream, or perhaps play, um, CS or something?

I had my first pvp encounter in wow within 2 weeks and if I had chosen to do so i could have participated regularly within 6 weeks against all comers (sooner if I didn't mind dying more against the higher lvls).

Nobody would buy the game you describe. I do however agree with the no levels aspect (UO has a lot to teach), and the defeatable guards of course.

Actually, i think that is close to what guild wars is. If you select PvP you start out at max level and you go to the arena and just PvP your heart out. But it is not an MMO so i guess it does not count.

I enjoy them. I wont even get into why they need to charge a monthly fee and why GW is not an MMO, i also dont like PvP in the mmos, so i guess our views differ friend.

I never understood why people would want to play an MMOG, if all they want to do is solo.

Well the lone wolf style is valid only when it's a choice...

Huh? I wasn't asking about the validity, just why would anybody want to be a 'lone wolf' (if that's the euphemism you want to use) in a game meant to be played with other people.

Cause people are annoying sometimes? My point is that other people being "around" allows people to truly play out a lone wolf style character. In a solo game you have no choice but to be alone...see what i'm saying?

How about a player who doesn't like to group with others but does like to discuss tactics and equipment/trade with/etcetcetc. There's more to the genre than "group-based level grinding" as HoP put it.

Have you played UO?

Yeah :S

I know why they charge it just saying.. But like how is the PvP in guild wars exactly? Is their factions or just just all vs all? Cus the funnest would be like back from the good ol UO days with like 6 SL defending a multifaction sig raid lol .. man that was always fun.. :p So chaotic.. and I would actually stau up until like 6 a.m. on school nights and whatnot defending those damn things.. yeah that was my life a couple years ago lol

I don't see what's so hard to understand about it. I have a hard time getting into MMOGs because I'm not a very good "team player." I try to do my job to the best of my ability, and I hate slacker idiots who suck outloud because they play "just for fun." It's an anal thing, I know. It's my problem. But just the same, I do like being part of a collective world full of people. Running around in the wilderness and seeing some other players run by in the distance, or just hanging out in a populated city, are still great thrills. It reminds me that I'm in a virtual world, populated by players, not mindless NPCs.

I'm perfectly content paying $x a month just to solo-play in an online world with other people. I still think its fun. I love to socialize, help others, and quest. I just hate to party up with strangers and try to accomplish anything remotely important.

Is everything in those games in an instance? The only time you see real people in guild wars is in the cities or when you have a very small party of 6 or less people. Ever been on a 50 man raid group in Guild Wars? You need to take a look at this thread. Guild Wars is like diablo II online in 3d with a few "meeting" zones. No one ever screamed diablo II was an MMORPG, which is wasnt.

Step outside of a major city in Everquest2 or in WoW. You will see many people, maybe even a hundred people in the zones outside of the towns questing, mucking around, raiding, etc. While in guild wars you do not see anyone outside of the towns, it is multiplayer, it is online roleplaying, but as for it being massive on the scale of Everquest and WoW.............

But really.... i dont know where to begin with this. Read the thread i linked.
