Hello,

I currently have a Dell 30" - it is very nice but I'd like something even better. I realize you can use TV's as widescreens but they don't really perform as well as monitors designed for computers when they are on computers. So this is strictly a question about computer screens designed to be computer screens, no hybrid or TV screen info is needed even if you think it works well as a computer monitor. I'm not trying to be narrow minded but I think this thread might get sidetracked quickly and I really am only interested in computer screens designed to be computer screens.

The new 30" from dell for 2008 offered better contrast but also had issues with consistency throughout the screen. I'm sure they'll have a new model out sometime within the next year.

What I'm ideally looking for is something even larger than 30" but being a computer monitor, not a TV screen acting as a monitor. Anyone aware of any new 30" or larger models coming out soon?

Thanks - I appreciate you taking the time to read this long post.

I think a little better explanation besides saying you don't want large T.V. that can be used as a monitor would be to say you want a very large screen monitor in excess of 2560x1600. See there is nothing wrong with a 40" t.v. being used as a monitor other than the fact that it has a low resolution compared to your 30" (1920x1080 vs 2560x1600). That being said.... are you saying that if i was able to show you a 46" t.v. with a res of 5120x3200 you wouldn't be interested? ;)

Is a 2-screen setup a possibility for you? I don't think I've heard of anything over 30" being marketed as a computer monitor.

We did have a long, argumentative thread last week about using 1080p HDTVs for daily use. ;)

37" 1080p is good but i did not like it for my work stuff, games are wow and movies

32" 1080p is good and no need for overkill gfx budget

Yep - I do have two 30's but I'd really love a large screen :) for my main screen. I do photo and video editing and gaming when time permits.

LOL - thanks - but what seems special one year becomes standard within about 5 years. Hopefully we'll see something much bigger than 30" with very high resolution in the near future so I can continue to have a "badass" system :)

I hope you have an extra $100,000+

EDIT: I learned to link.

What sort of video card would you need to drive that thing?

Anyways, as far as new computer screens go, the best I see is the newish 30" NEC. Same resolution as the Dell, but the stand can pivot.

What's the max res that dual link DVI can drive to a panel? I know displayport is higher bandwidth so that shouldn't be an issue. It would be interesting to see if a mainstream monitor came out bigger than 30in/2560x1600. Small market, but would be awesome if you could afford one.

I don't think it would be that small of a market. I work for two different graphics companies that would like them - they already have plenty of 30" screens. I work for a commercial company that would like them as well and a few CEO's I work for would like them as well even though they pretty much just read e-mail and check their stocks. I'm sure a number of the dean's and regents at the university I work for would like them as well - particularly the older ones.

I'm sure a while back when people were using 14" VGA screens as standard monitors, they would have asked how big the market would be fore 21" SVGA screens.

5 years ago, how many 30" screens were on the market. Now they seem pretty common at the places I work.

Oh I definitely see the need for specific users, but I still think it's a small market. I personally haven't seen a 30inch in use in a corporate environment (and I've been in a lot of offices). Even trading desks I've seen mostly multiple LCD's, usually arrays of 20in 4:3 ot 24inch.

Personally, if I had a lot of money I'd get one, because more screen real estate is always better :)

I *think* you would need 2 video cards, each with 2 dviports. Essentially, this is pretty close to quad 1920x1200 ... just no border between the "screens" ....

Hmm... so hard to meet both your interests. Plenty of big TVs but no higher resolution. Then there's the IBM T221 that has a higher resolution but way smaller.
I don't think they'll come out with ultra high resolution monitors larger than 30" for awhile because it's unuseful for almost everyone. Quad HDTVs are predicted to be available around 2015 so maybe around 2011/2012 for monitors of that resolution. If you have the right connections, you could probably get a Quad HD display (for industry purposes) for $50k, which is the price Westinghouse put on their 50" Quad HD unit.
But it may be cheaper to get a T221 and use it to build your own 9.2MP projector.
