I'm pretty close to getting an MVS (4-slot) 😎

Curious to see if anyone else remembers the coolest, most fabled 16-bit system of all time. Any favorite games? I'm sure everyone here's played Samurai Showdown, at least... then again, some ATOTers weren't even born when this came out in '90, damn...

No gaming hardware has been so legendary while still in its heyday. I knew one kid in 5th grade who was rich and had a younger brother (only by a year or two) whose parents wouldn't make him go to school for some reason. He'd just refuse to go for weeks at a time. Well one day the brother locked himself in his bedroom and wouldn't come out until they bought him a Neo-Geo AES. They bought it for him :roll: The closest I ever came to seeing an AES back then (before you could simply Google it) was when I convinced myself to try to be the older classmate's friend so I could get invited to his house, lol. I gave the plan up when I realized the dislike was too much to overcome or even fake, not even for Neo-Geo 😛

Also... anyone know exactly how tall either of these pictured cabinets are? Trying to do some planning.

I had the V1 cabinet a few years back. I'd put the height at somewhere around 6ft give or take a few inches. Metal Slug series FTW 😉
 
Yep, I have one in a cabinet, only a couple of games for it so far though. It's bolted on one side of the cabinet and I have a machine that will eventually run MAME on the other side.
 
Samurai Showdown (and 2) are my favorite games of all time. My roommate had the home console version, and it was just the sweetest thing ever. Mind this was in like 1995 or so, so it was seriously awesome.
 
The other cool thing about getting one of these cabinets is that they're JAMMA compliant (at least the one I had was). You can put all kinds of games in there just by swapping out the boards.

Fixed 😛 I have no plans to cannibalize a perfectly good multislot MVS. Incidentally, AFAIK the MVS boards themselves are technically not JAMMA compliant. The single slot is close, but the multislots definitely need some harness hacking to handle the game switching mechanism.

I'm specifically interested in the height of the v.3, with the dual speakers and "neo-geo" signage above the marquees. My basement's overhead clearance is pretty dicey (it's an old house)... I have a potentially great deal lined up for the v3, but it's no good if I can't fit it where it's intended to do.

Shockingly, there seems to be zero info on the dimensions of any MVS cabinets out there, and my Google Fu is pretty strong.

 
My favorite Neo Geo game is a golf game called Neo Turf Masters - it is a golf game in the casual/arcade style. I have a gametap subscription just to play it. I strongly recommend it!!

Bit of a digression, but I've always wondered why people pay Gametap to play emulated games, when even arcade emulators have been freely downloadable for years (ROMs notwithstanding). Unless you were exaggerating about there being a single game you play on Gametap, NeoMAME alone might save you your monthly fee... just a suggestion 🙂

EDIT:Just tried Turf Masters out... definitely a fun game! :thumbsup:
 
I always wanted a Neo Geo system but they're so expensive to buy stuff for. Have you ever visited Neo-Geo.com? My friend always links me to pictures of peoples personal collections.

One of my friends recently bought an AES system, its insane how much he pays for used carts for that system, I think he said his most expensive one was $350 for Samurai Showdown V Special. I still remember seeing the system on sale new at Software etc for $600 and most games were about $200 each.

My personal favorite games were/are

Thanks, HardMVS is where I stole the 4-slot cabinet pics from for the OP. I didn't see any H-W-D measurements anywhere though.

I was just seeing if anyone happened to have this at hand right now... I can probably call the seller tomorrow and have him measure.

Wrong 😀 The MVS cart slot is not JAMMA compliant by any stretch, but the MVS board ITSELF has an edge connector that will accept JAMMA boards (again, this is on the unit I had). There is no need to "cannibalize" anything. Swapping a JAMMA board in there takes as much work as swapping an MVS cartridge. I had a couple of boards like The Simpsons, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and a few others that I played as regularly as I played MVS carts. A single JAMMA edge connector just needed to be plugged and unplugged that was in the same location as the MVS slot itself.

Edit: I honestly can't remember if I had a single cart or multi-cart system though, so YMMV 😉

Hehe, I wasn't suggesting the cart slots themselves were JAMMA compliant, but rather that the point of me getting an MVS was to be able to switch games without having to worry at all about that side of things 🙂 I've never done a cab swap for ANY board/cabinet, but from what I've read the single-slot MVS boards are much easier to swap completely in/out than the multi-slot ones. However, I'll definitely take your word for it and keep it in mind in case I get an urge to play a non-SNK title.
 
I have always wanted a Neo-Geo, looked at getting an AES system with a converter a few months ago. Way to expensive, 200-300 for the system and any AES games and then another 250 or so for the converter.
Sucks, I have no room for a MVS cabinet. 🙁
 
This is where I'm going to go with mine:

This way I can run the Neo Geo exactly like it's supposed to be into the Jamma harness.

The MAME Jamma adapter I have is actually a little different control-wise from the Neo Geo for some reason, so I have to not only change the edge connector, but fiddle with a few other things to switch over and it's just not worth it.

With the multi, you can mess with your harness on either side, and leave your actual cabinet and Neo Geo basically stock, and then add in a few other game boards if you want to, and then have a button to switch between. It also makes sure that teh power supply always has a load so it doesn't fry. Pretty slick.

 
Okay, to settle a few things in this thread:

1) The Big red 4 v.2 IMO is the one to go with. The speakers are easiest to get to and replace. It's sturdy, and (relatively) compact. Games are also easily accessible and has a good locking mechanism.

2) The v.2 is 5'10"-6'0", there are feet on the bottom. They are removable, held in by furniture staples and a screw plate. FYI, don't try replacing with wheels, it'll just snap them right out. Tried some of the industrial cart wheels from Lowe's.

3) The 68000 is a 16 bit processor with a 32 bit instruction set. 32 bit instructions take two seperate words to execute, which makes it a 16 bit processor. 68020 is the first true 32 bit Moto processor.

4) The MV-4 is not a JAMMA board. All of the extra connections (trigger game change, 4th action button, stereo sound) are on pins that are no connection (NC) on the JAMMA pinout, so you can plug in a JAMMA board and have it work perfectly. Sound will only come out of one speaker though, since the cabinet is wired for stereo and JAMMA is mono.

5) Buying a Neo cabinet is a tricky proposition. I wouldn't buy one unless you've got a local TV repair guy that doesn't charge three arms and two legs. Most of these cabinets are very old and the CRTs have been juiced, or the gain turned way up to mask failing guns. The CRT itself can be replaced while retaining the chassis if it is still good. I had to replace mine due to a dead red gun.

6) The placard lights are typically dead or dying too. Not a big deal, I disconnected mine.
 
All you need is one of these and the latest MAME. Done. That way you can play all your Neo Geo games AND whatever else you can think of.

I know "this guy" that has all the Neo Geo games. And yeah, Samurai Showdown and Fatal Fury series are GREAT! 🙂

I've got this guy, but I need to finally buy a Slik Stik cabinet to go along with it. There is only so much KI2 I can play. 🙂

Those are come nice cabinets. Too bad I don't have the expendable income to buy something like that at the moment.
