Any negatives to the ACER aspire Netbooks before I get one?

I want to get a netbook. Main uses would be as a electronic notebook - something to run power points off of and something I can surf the net from not stuck in front of my desk all of the time. I have no illusions to it's power, etc. ..

Local walmart has one for 298$. . . the acer inspire with the 160gb harddrive. .

Thanks for opinions. . .

I was thinking since I was asking an opinion it wouldn't be proper for the hardware forum . . . dunno - I was thinking that the other forums were 'technical' mods feel free to move, my head isn't on straight.

acer build quality has always been subpar to other manufacturers. It may be worth it to get an asus or HP, but i don't own a netbook so take that with a grain of salt.

Just got the 10" Aspire One and love it. My old Travelmate 802LCI is on the way out and this will be the travel-compatible replacement. So far it's pretty awesome. No negatives other than going from 15" to 10" is quite the transition.

Did yours come with the 5800mAh battery or the stupid 4400mAh one that they underhandedly slipped in after the reviews came out?

One huge con of the 8.9" Aspire One is the extreme difficulty in taking the thing apart to increase the RAM or replace the hard drive. It's a long drawn process and one which leads me to believe that Acer really doesn't want you to be able to upgrade it.

Apparently, you also cannot add a 2GB SODIMM to it, the max you can replace is 1GB for a total of 1.5GB.

I owned an Acer Aspire 5100. After about 8 months it developed random problems of PCI conflicts during POST.

When I contacted Acer the first time about it via email, they never responded. When I called, the first rep I spoke to put me on hold and 20 minutes later I was disconnected. When I filed a request for warrenty repair, they told me this was not a defect of the laptop and was not covered under warrenty. I spent hours searching on Google and found out it was apparently a known problem and that they weren't doing anything about it.

They blatently refused to stand behind their product. Every time I tried to talk to them they either ignored me or blamed it on abuse...which that laptop never saw any abuse other than every-day wear and tear. When the unit was out of warrenty...they finally offered to fix it...for around $250.

After looking at a few Acers, I discovered thier build quality, as mentioned, was very inferior to anything else on the market. IMO, I'd advise against purchasing an Acer product of any sort ever. They don't last and when they do have a major defect they decide to blame you 'till the warrenty is out and then say "it's a defect and it's a $250 repair for out-of-warrenty". *facepalm*

This is the main reason I am not going to buy the Aspire One. If I could be guaranteed the larger battery I would buy it in a heartbeat.
