Any need for an HD turner if you are using cable and DVDs?

Is there any reason a TV needs an internal HD tuner these days? Cable boxes have their own tuner yes?

Yes, and you might get a better quality hdtv signal from local networks because they have more bandwidth to transmit a higher data rate signal (potential is there, but obviously station has to put out quality image to start with).

No you do not need one if you are using a satellite or cable service. I personally don't see the point of OTA HD as I'm just limited to local channels. If I pay for a nice new HD set, I'm using satellite or cable for my HD. In an ideal world, I'll be using FiOS. That being said, the HD set I'm planning on buying doesn't even have a QAM tuner. But then again, it doesn't have speakers or a stand either. :)

:) Hey man, I won't have it for another month or so. I have to buy a stand (Salamander Synergy) and receiver (SC-07) with it too. So it's going to be a big chunk of change all at one time. :( But this is my baby, and I've waited a loooong time for it. The Dark Knight will look SWEET in all its Blu-ray glory come December. I can't wait. :)

if that station was from your area, it would fall under federal must-carry laws.
The cable company is, understandably, not wanting to _pay_ KXAN for carrying it - which makes sense, given that they transmit OTA for free to anyone willing to tune in.

Blame KXAN for the money grab, IMHO.

I think the must carry law is just for basic cable and digital in the clear. This happened with another cable provider in the area with the same channel (KXAN) and it was gone from Suddenlink's lineup for about 3 months. I think the law says that if you offer the analog channel you must not encrypt the digital channel for any stations available over the air.

I use OTA only, so I could care less if these 2 companies fight it out for 2 years.
