I go there to apply, turn in my form, write out my checks and take oath and sign. The lady staples things togather, including my Naturalization certificate. I asked her if she is not going to make a copy, and she said "No, the actual goes with the form, and is returned to you".

So I am to understand, that I am going to submit an original document to someone I don't know, which is going to be mailed and tossed around, and if lost, i gotta go to the main INS office 100 miles away to reapply to another one.

My brother applied last year, and he said they made a photocopy of it, and that was all. I asked the lady if they had made any recent changes, but she said it's always been like that.

For some reason I think she is wrong.

Yes, that's the way it is. You send it in.
If you read the certificate, it says it's illegal to make a copy of it.

To be exact, it says it's illegal to reproduce it without lawful authority. I'm pretty sure some time in the past, passport clerks were once authorized figures.

Still, I applied for mine before the new rules and regs and even then, the original was required for application. Considering its significance and meaning, I wasn't too pleased when it was returned in a #10 envelope, folded in thirds. :(
