I just wish they would give us more news about Valve. Everytime I startup Steam it's always "hey, look at these new games we have now!!". I don't give a shit about that, I want news from Valve about Valve like it use to be before they started whoring out the market.

I'm still betting HL2: Ep3 just becomes HL3

I'm sort of thinking the same thing. I think they went into Ep3 with a whole bunch of ideas, and realized that they couldn't do them all properly in a single episode. If Ep3 is supposed to end the whole HL saga, they have a lot of ground to cover and I'm guessing it's more ground than can be covered in about 5-7 hours of game play.

I'm guessing we'll see HL2: Episode 3 + Portal 2 (a lot longer than the first one) in the next 12 months.

HL2 came out 6 years after HL1. If we see Episode 3 this November, that will mean it took the same times to make all of HL2 (including a whole new engine) as it did to make Episodes 1-3 (with only partial engine improvements). Kinda sad.

Silly Left 4 Dead took all their time.

L4D didn't take their time. They got that game from another company that was already developing it. Valve acquired it in January 08 so there's seriously no excuse as to why Ep 3 isn't finished.

Stickied on the official STEAM forums:

http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=735427&highlight=ep3

August 12th, 2009: Gabe Newell explains in a SteamCast podcast interview that he has nothing to discuss of Ep3 for the time being. He says right now the Valve team is in an experimental stage of game development. Still no ETA for Episode 3.

[As of January 2010: No info yet]

Can you say.. "Half-Life FOREVER [in development"? :D

Seriously, what the hell has Valve been up to...

As stated above, they are milking the zombie fad while it lasts. I wonder what will be next, the WW2 fad was ended by the "modern war" fad and the "zombie fad" now coexists with the "modern war" fad.

How about a game where one plays Confederate and Union vampires fighting a secret underground war in modern New Orleans. Each side can have specific animal companions, like polar bears infected with lycanthropy.

I would definitely pay for that.

Then you've been playing the wrong games. MP has it's place, but that shit is what gets boring, running around and shooting people in the same ways, over and over again.

I'll take a well crafted story any day.

Yep, this pretty much sums up my feeling. I haven't played more than a couple hours of MP games in a year or more but have gone back to playing SP instead. Seems that all of them are pretty much the same anymore with different skins.

The original plan with the HL2 episodes was to bring them out within a "short" time period and have the collection of those episodes basically be HL3. Hopefully thats not still the plan.

I'm just glad I was able to pick up Ep 1 and 2 in the Orange Box, if I had to buy them as a standalone I would have been pissed big time by now. With the long development time between episodes, buying the 1st and 2nd as standalones is basically funding the development for the 3rd, and the price of all 3 episodes is higher than the single game. End up paying more money for the same content over a greater development cycle.

i guess i'm the opposite. that only thing that keeps my interest is MP games like TF2 and CSS.

a huge problem with gems like Half-Life, is that no matter how epic they are, they're really only good for one play-through, maybe two. Perhaps its fun to pick it back up and play through once a year, but really, thats only a handful of hours before you're done with it.

On top of that, its probably much harder to actually produce such a game (at least one that is quality) so there is less incentive for the producer to produce and the players to buy.

My guess is they are secretly working on HL3 with a new engine. Remember all the silence before HL2 was announced? Valve seems to be very good at keeping their projects under wraps.

That would be amazing. Considering how long it has been since Episode 2 released, I'd be much happier if they just released a Half Life 3 full length game to be the conclusion rather than another short episode. Being on a brand new engine while not necessary, would be rather nice.

I know that the HL2 team strikes me as particularly passionate about the story they were trying to craft.

I'm led to believe that either:

1) they're making something REALLY special and are being extra careful to not spill any news

or

2) the higher-ups at Valve have forced the project onto the backburner in light of other things that are more profitable

The game is completed, they ran into some licensing issues and the release is in limbo while they spend time in court.
