Any monitored home security systems that work without a landline? Also what else could I NEED a landline for?

We want to avoid using a landline in the new house. ADT I know requires a landline for their monitoring. Are there any other monitoring services that do not? Obviously they'd go through radio waves or magic.

Also is there anything I'm not thinking of that requires a landline, like getting a new car or crap like that?

Utilities in my area require(or did last time I checked) a land line number for the acct holder - Water, Elect, gas, and etc.

Banks may require a land line # for loans too but I couldn't say for sure.

I don't have a landline, cable internet and cell phone only. The funny thing is when I call T-Mobile they ask for my home phone, I give them the number I had when I signed up, and it has been disconnected for 8 months!

The house i am living in does not have a land line. It is nice. We all have cell phones so we do not see why to spend the extra money for a land line.

just get the cheapest possible one with no options. it won't be that bad.
It's like $30 for a no frills fvcking landline out here. Retarded!

Anybody know of a security system that will work without one?

I'm still waiting for a cell phone interface for that. All the perpetrator has to do to defeat your alarm is to cut your phone line, which is usually visible and unprotected. Kinda sucks.

I know my parents have a radio transmitter - I assumed most monitoring systems had one...? ADT really relies only on landline? How pathetic if that's the case.

I would question the fact that ADT relies only on landline... I thought that there were other ways they could monitor, like by radio transmitter or some such device. TCP/IP via cable internet would be a nice idea 😉

I know that if the landline is cut, disconnected, compromised, or otherwise fails, then the system goes into alarm mode... I know that the company has called Dad on his cell about an alarm before, because of monitoring failure with the unit.

When my parents had ADT a few months back, it relied on a landline. ADT monitoring would send a signal along the line every few minutes and if they did not get the expected reply, they would (supposedly) send someone out. Not that the person they sent out would arraive within the same week or anything.

Makes sense then. I guess they rely on your phone calling in every once in a while.

If they don't automatically call the cops it's kind of pointless isn't it?

you can get cell phone and radio backups for alarm systems.
call a real alarm company (not ADT). it may cost you more upfront for the install, but the monthy fee will be less.
look in the yellow pages.

Big Angry Dogs don't require landlines. Although, they generally require a food and water source, and if you want to get into your home, probably some form of training.

Still for the $$$ they are probably a much better investment if you want to protect your belongings. If you want to actually get lower HOInsurance or give the illusion of protection, the monitored alarm is an option.

Ask some of the alarm companies if they have a cellular option, may be $>Landline, but, it'd also give you protection from a smart thief who knows to cut the phone line outside before stealing your stuff.

911 can't locate you automatically from a cell phone.
Being on hold for a long time is a real drag without a speakerphone.
Cell circuits overload long before landline circuits do if there's a serious emergency (tornado, etc.). And in a severe power outage the cell tower nearest to you might be dead.
If you have a relative or friend staying at your house, and you are out, you can't get in touch with them.
Need a landline to fax.
Nearly impossible for someone to get in touch with you in an emergency if you aren't in the phone book and they don't have your cell number already. (Had that happen when a guy at work didn't come in and we had no way to contact his family to see if everything was OK.)
