I used to love this genre - I've been trying to find something modern that'll blow my mind away with stunning visuals etc but can't find anything :-(

edit: sorry, wrong forum :(

Not bad, not bad. Any others? I played a good one called Strayfire a couple of years ago - company seems to have gone out of business though, website's no longer there.

No scroller is going to blow your mind away. Developers have latched on to the First Person Shooter bandwagon like ticks on a dog, and they will ride it for decades so long as people keep shelling out 50-60 bucks for new titles.

Jets'n'Guns is a really good game similar to Gradius and R-Type. It has a crapload of ship upgrades and a metric butt ton of weapons.

At the end of each mission you get a bunch of money and usually access to a couple new items. The cool thing is they never lose value, so when you sell them you get all your money back. If you dont like your current loadout you can sell everything off and have every single dollar you ever earned.

The main difficulty for me was getting enough money to have all the guns I wanted and keep them fully upgraded (more about that later). I didnt think the game gave you enough money in the later levels.
Oh, yes about that. Most guns and missiles and bombs can be upgraded with anywhere between 2 and 6 levels of power, some of them seem like totally new items when you max them out.
You can have 3 forward guns, 1 rear, 1 missile launcher and 1 bomb. Many of the guns will produce some sort of heat so you will need to upgrade your coolant to compensate, or keep a healthy mix of heated and non-heated weapons. The guns can be your standard bullet and laser types, some of them shoot in all degrees and one actually shoots out homing ghost skulls.

The missiles are cool too. You can get one that sprays a crapload of dumbfires which is good for covering the map with weak hits, they also have the standard homing missile and one that spins in a big loop really fast to catch things in front of you.
The bombs come in several varieties but the best one isnt a bomb at all, it a gun pod that floats. Eventually it can be upgraded to shoot a penetrating laser beam. Sweet!

On your ship: You can upgrade cooling, armor, shields (which produce heat), repairing nanobots (which only work when you have NO heat), a spinning sphere to intercept attacks, an escape pod/spacesuit with a minigun, bounty hunter license and some other neat little goodies.

I highly recommend you get this game.

We also have Duke Nukem Manhatten Project, its a little like Contra but set in the city. The game is rendered in 3D and its actually not too bad looking.

Good, simple action, lots of fun.
I recommend.

That might be a pic of the last boss, I wouldnt know. The game has some HARD jumping puzzles leftover from the Nintendo/SuperNES days. I still cant beat it.

Duke Nukem Mahatten Project, as already mentioned is good. I kind of liked Codename Gordon, free if you own HL2 or a lot of other Valve games. I never finished either but had a good time. Duke was definitely more involved and a better overall game.

I miss side scroller, that's why I started playing Maple Story last week, kind of lame but the graphics and action are a throwback to a better gaming time.

Cheers for all the recommendations guys - and I second that JnG has a good difficulty level, I've not even finished the first level yet (very close) on the demo - how embarrassing :)

Was going to say Duke Nukem Manhattan Project, someone already mentioned. Another one I can think of but the name isn't coming to me is someone made a Halo scrolling shooter game that was pretty fun, had all the weapons from the game and enemies, I can't remember the actual name of it though, maybe Halo zero?

UT2k4 had a full game mod for scrolling shooter. I forget the name but if you have UT2k4 and are interested, I can find out. I've got the mod somewhere on my HDD at home and played it once or twice. It's okay I guess but I'm just not into scrolling shooters. There's also a top down shooter called Alien Swarm for UT2k4 based on the Aliens movies.

I got the full version of Jets N Guns last Night and I played it for 2 hours straight. I kept telling myself I have to quit after this level. I think I played like 4 levels saying that.

If you've never played Einhander on the Playstation, it might be exactly what you're looking for... This is a space shooter from '98, but back in college, my buddies and I would get very intoxicated and play this all night...

it's not really a side scroller, but have you tried "Shadowgrounds Survivor"? that was a pretty cool arcade-like shooter.

Oh my God...

I just tried Jets N Guns, I never had that much fun in a long time. Many thanks to this thread, I'm now addicted to a side-scrolling action game like the old days (and oh boy those were the days for gaming). Now I need to beat the third level...

Yeah, that's why I started this thread. Modern games have amazing graphics etc, but they don't hold my attention anything like simple games like this.

Anyone here played Peggle? Most ridiculously simple game, but had me hooked for about a month lol!

Another vertical scroller I used to play a few years ago was DemonStar, that's pretty good.

Can Jets N Guns graphics be improved by using AA and AF etc?

It looks reasonable but on a 42" HDTV, I do feel an "urgh" on the occaision I have a breather from the action.

Going to purchase Gold now.

do you have an ATI or nVidia card? I know with nVidia cards, you can go into the nVidia control panel and set manual settings for specific games. It might work.

I'm sorry but have you actually played the game?
The only reason I'm curious is its 2D and I have absolutely no freaking clue why you would be asking about anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering.

Also, just a little tip: I know the 16 year old at Best Buy seems like he knows everything, but if he did he probably wouldnt be working at Best Buy.
What you believe is HIGH DEFINITION TELEVISION is about 3 or 4 generations behind the average computer monitor.
And a game like this was meant to be played in casual sessions at your desk anyway. Its not Doom 3 or Crysis, its a cheap little shooter.

/asshole

WOW! That felt great, getting my vent.
