any MDs out there? HELP!!!

i have this prob, need hlep, docs i've been to do'nt do jack.
i get canker sores in my mouth every so often, goes away for couple wk and come back, repeated cycle. ITS KILLING ME
been happenin for past yr + i'm almost 20, dunno why this is happening.
maybe its stress, too busy w/ school, but this has been going on repeatedly.
any MDs out there w/ advice/medication to permanately cure my sickness?

dentist says i got healthy teeth, brush twice daily, no change of habit in that. only thing i can think of is that i used to live in canada, cold weather, now in CA (6 yrs already) never had any probs b4...

I'm not an MD either, but if it's anything like cold sores, then stress and genral health (or lack thereof) will have a big effect. Try some a good multivitamin, maye some extra C and L-Lysine (that one is supposed to be good for cold sores, guess it can't hurt to try).

I'd say it's either stress or eating habits, or a mixture of both.

How active are you, what types of foods do you eat, and what sort of lifestyle in general do you lead?

Do you eat alot of sweets or drink alot of soda? The reason I ask is my husband says that's what triggers his and he gets some nasty ones.

The only other thing I can think of, that hasn't been mentioned, is herpes since you say they've been coming back in cycles. I'm sure your Dr. would have checked for that though.

Canker Sores - Caused by damage to oral tissue, often by Sodium Lauryl Sulphate, a common foaming agent ingredient in almost all toothpastes.

Unfortunately, the public ends up creating their own "canker sore" problem, by using commercial toothpastes, which contain an ingredient that has been proven to be linked to canker sores. It's called Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS), and is placed into toothpaste (and some mouthwashes) in order to create foaming! (Sodium Lauryl Sulphate is also the main ingredient in your shampoo - go check it out.) The harshness of this chemical has been proven to create microscopic damage to the oral tissue which lines the inside of your mouth, which then leads to Canker Sores.


i'm assuming there are brands of toothpaste that are SLS-free.

and...it might be caused by something else, i'm not sure how reliable http://www.freshbreath.com.au is, they make it sound like sls is the only cause of canker sores.

maybe the foods, well since i know i have this prob i avoid sweets. i'm a meateater, no veggies but i have my vitamins. aint sexually active yet, so can we rule out herpes? and for my doc, THEY DUN DO SH*t they make u wait forever to see 'em and rush u out the moment u see him/her. i hate going to see docs btw, only docs I'd willing to see is my dermatologist and dentist, no waittime!

You don't have to be sexually active to contract herpes. Now if you're saying you don't kiss either, then you should be safe.

I'm not trying to scare you, just weighing all the options.

herpes causes cold sores, which are usually found outside of the mouth. you followed the link in my edited post above right?

i did read about toothpaste and the SLS thingie.thing is that i have been using same toothpaste since i was child so i can i can rule that out? and i have yet to expereince my first kiss so much info given in this thread about me ahhaha
have tried lysine and stuff don't help much, also tried vita b i think little help not sure.
just finished reading it, this site provided good info, probably to get u to buy it, i'll probalby try out the product..
um price way too high so i guess no ..

as a soon to be DO (hopefully) and son of one now, try some lysine, available as a vitamin at any vitamin store and even your walmart, its what i take when i get canker sores and it clears them up in a few days, they do return in a few months, but there is nothing that cures herpes yet, the lysine can control them for awhile though

stonerdave, a form of herpes causes cold sores. A more severe form of herpes cause mouth ulcers.

kaiotes, my husband uses something called Tanac when he gets them. He claims it works.

any info on where u can purchase this product? is this a toopaste, cream or?
i have this orjel thingie, its a liquid type hard to cover the sore w/ it completely.... the saliva makes the orajel hard to do its job....

Should be in the same area as Orajel. My husband doesn't like orajel. He says it tastes awful and doesn't work.

cuz these type of things, can easily be brushed off its intended place, u know saliva and stuff ur tongue accidently licking it...

I'm not sure if it comes in gel form because my husband buys the liquid. The bottles looks just like the orajel liquid bottle.

so i guess what happens is u put it on the sore and it forms a patch over it, i guess i might as well as try it, as i'm trying to find something thats more sticky than the orajel that i've tried so far... thanks!

There's one called Orabase that's more sticky and works fairly well. I find a direct link between lack of sleep or illness and canker sores. I usually get one right after having the flu or a nasty cold.

Have you tried a good cleansing mouthwash?? That might help. You might also try swishing a mouthful of salt water around.

Listerine is awesome. Try that. Kills all kinds of microbes.

I've even used it in removing grease from a motorcycle sprocket.

I find that diluting a bit of hydrogen peroxide and rinsing my mouth with it works well. It tastes funny and the bubbles feel strange but it kills the sores fast.
