first of all plz don't just give a link, I've been to all of them.

I mean WTF is happening to mame. I'm not a pro on this but I've tried to read every faq that I could download, so far so good but now I mean WTF I have to deal with the following.

I've downloaded.
mame Test Drivers v0.69u3.zip
mame069u3b.zip
mame069u3b_i686.zip
mame069u3s.zip
mame32 test drivers working.zip
mame32v69bb.zip
mame32v69u3b.zip
mame32v69u3b_i686.zip
mame69u3-thl.dat
rom0.69u3.zip
mame068b.zip

I downloaded some 200 roms with 69u3 in the subject for which only 3 work before and after building them with clrmame pro.
I've downloaded another different 100 roms and tried them in various MAME frontends and nothing.

So your a newbie and see this.

You have to deal with 0.69 to 0.69u3 update 0.69u3 new and changes 0.69u3 source and binaries 0.69u3 testdriver CMP Dat file 0.69u3 Testdrivers roms and 30 diff types of frontends and just now I saw some 0.70 beta roms. You have split sets, merged sets, you need to scan sets you need to rebuild sets, you have snapshots, cabinet files and mame titles and ect....

Someone asked.

> This is showing 173 roms not working. After I checked the Non working
> Roms list that Mame 32.69 shows I checked mame dk I compared the files
> and most of them are listed as not working on their list either. My
> question is how can they show them to be perfect files if they do not
> work?

>>Non working means exactly that, the emulation is not working correctly.
>>That doesn't mean the rom is incorrect in any way.

Well again, why put out an emulator that can't work ??

Ok for you pro's it's no problem but WTF does work ??? and what works with what. You say that "non working means exactly that, the emulation is not working" so what your posting roms or emulators that don't work ???

If your posting a 0.69u3 rom should it not work in mame32v69u3b.zip

I have access to mame32's and all the roms there are but what friggen works ? can someone give me a rundown on how this works.

When a rom is listed as not working it means that MAME is unable to properly emulate the original hardware that the game ran on when it was in the arcade machine. The rom is still good in the sense that it is a duplicate of the rom memory which was on the original circuit board. They are available with the hope that support will come in a future update.
You are unable to get any roms at all to run though, even the ones listed as working? If that is the case I would try Mame32qa. It is a win32 version of mame with an integrated gui. Get the installer version and install, then put all of the roms you believe are good in the Mame32/roms directory. You do not need to unzip the individual files from within the roms, leave them in zip form. For example put gghost.zip in your rom directory, do an audit, and ghouls & ghosts will now show as available. Mame should do an audit the first time you run it, after it is finished you can select the "available" filter on the left side. The other things like snapshots, marquees, etc. will also have a directory in the mame32 folder, if you have them place them accordingly to get the extra functionality. These examples are just with mame32, other front ends my function differently. The most recent release of mame32 is version 69b if I am not mistaken.

I've found that the biggest mistake people make is unzipping the ROMs they download to a ROMs directory. Zipped ROMs only need to be placed into the ROMs directory. The MAME program will then refresh the list everytime you update it with the zipped ROMs. I've also found that just placing the zipped ROMs into the MAME directory will also give you the same results.

ok I have 69b installed and did an audit and it said that 8 were correct and 2 incorrect for a total of 6 out of 131 roms so out of 131 roms and 630 Megs worth I can only play 6 ???

>When a rom is listed as not working it means that MAME is unable to properly emulate the original hardware that the game ran on

but at this rate I'll need to download 1310 roms to play about 60, if mame32 .69b is the best or so good why would it only play less than %6 of roms

am I missing something here.

GOOD rom sites have roms listed and which version of MAME they work with. For instance, I have MAME32 v64. I don't like how the newer versions look so I'm just sticking with v64 until a rom that comes out NEEDS the latest version. Anyway, you can have the SAME game but with two different roms. One works for a certain version range (like v58-64) and the other works for another version range. If you are running the latest version of MAME32 and download a rom that is designed to run on MAME32 v58, you'll probably have it come up as a non working rom. That being said, I know "someone" who has 3000+ roms and only 3 don't work. 😉

And like wnied said, don't unzip the roms. Just download them to your ROM folder in your MAME32 directory.

Here is a challenge for the pros: Get Killer Instinct and Killer Instinct 2 to run at 100% (full speed) on your PC. I'll give you a hint, if you run it on MAME32 (any version), a P4 running at 5GHz will probably play the game at 40%. 😉 And yes, it can be done.

dude...just find a "romburnner" and get the whole collection from them. I got all .69 roms for less than $10.00...thats somewhere around 3800 roms....9gb worth 🙂

I have often found that the newer versions do not work as well as the older generations of Mame32.

I use Mame 0.36 and virtually all roms work perfectly.

All 1106 of them 😉

Ya, that's the problem. Older versions don't support as many games. I've found v64 is perfect. Also, older versions don't support hard drive image roms (ie. Killer Instinct).

Same here, I also use Mame036 and I too have at least 500+ ROMs running with it.

I am looking for Mortal Kombat II. I have yet to find a working version of that. And I have been actively searching for it for the last two years. I've had several people send me versions t hey said worked, only to have it go through the rom testing sequence and lock up there. So...if anyone has it working on their machine, please drop an email at wnied@hotmail.com or let me know an ftp addy to grab it from. On the same note, I would be happy to provide someone with my ROM list to upload to an ftp site to share.😉

What games specificly are you trying to play, I will compare and see if I have it & if it is working or not.

well progress is being made. I got a hold of the ROM Information and tables for version 0.69b and I'm doing a few at a time. I also have the ROM Changes from version 0.69a to version 0.69b so I'm slowly getting there. So far I have 25 working with mame 0.69b and all the snapshot, icons, backgrounds and cabinet files.

Can someone explain what Arcade and Neo-Geo emulated games are, can those games work with mame or do they need another emulator ?

>What games specificly are you trying to play, I will compare and see if I have it & if it is working or not.

just one example, I have roms called 9ballsh2 9ballsh3 and 9balsht but they arent listed in MAME neo-geo or arcade. so what are they and what would play them.

and what's ClrMame all about.

I can not get any neo geo emulators to work in winxp pro. maybe I have found crappy ones, what are any you guys recommend?

I used NeoRage when I was running 98SE but it doesn't work with XP. BUT, you can run NeoGeo games on MAME32. Like I said, I'm using version 64 and run all the old time classic NeoGeo games. 😉

NeoGeo games work under mame, you need the NeoGeo bios file(neogeo.zip) in your rom directory to run them however. As far as the arcade filter, I assume that it just sorts the games so as to remove all of the demo and hacked/edited roms. I am currently running 0.64, and I dont have a specific arcade filter so I can't be certain.

I do not have any of the roms you listed (9ballsh2 9ballsh3 and 9balsht). All I could find on them was that they are from a game called 9 ball shootout. They are test roms not currently supported by an official release, I do not know how you would use them.

ClrMame is basicly a database program for sorting/managing roms. It is useful for managing roms between different versions of mame.

I recommend MAME32. It is the only file required other than the roms.

I keep mine up to date with little trouble by having an account at www.mame.dk and receive an email when a new version comes out, then download the latest from alt.binairies.emulators.misc and rebuild all with clrmame and pick up any stragglers from www.mame.dk as necessary. The samples and artwork can be had at mameworld.net and classicgaming.com/mame32qa/ as mentioned above. Retrogames is an excellent info resource.

>you need the NeoGeo bios file(neogeo.zip) in your rom directory to run them however.

Well that explains it... thanks.

Auric, Mitzi thanks for the info I'll give that a try.

I have another question, when you get a ROM will that ROM always stay the same, I mean when I update MAME will I just need to 'rebuild' them in order for them to work in the new release?

Few change with each release as you can see at www.mame.dk. For simplicity sake though, I keep all my roms merged and in one folder and upon a new release I put all the new and changed ones into a subfolder and use clrmame to rebuild the rom folder with the subfolder scan option enabled and also the recompress option disabled to save time. Since I have the space, I rebuild to another folder without removing the source files then rename the original rom folder (roms-old) then move the new roms into a roms folder and scan with clrmame to verify all is well before deleting roms-old. If any are still missing then I fetch and rebuild manually as necessary but usually the new and changed roms posted on usenet are complete. Contrary to what you might think it is actually easier to maintain a complete set than just the roms you might be particularly interested in, at least after a certain point. Back in the early days I used to do that but it took a lot of "human time", rather than just "computer time".
