I'm planning on buying a new LCD moniter because this 15" one just isn't cutting it anymore, I've been looking at some prices and seems reasonable to me, but I'm not too clear on how to define a "good quality" LCD moniter... I don't want to sit and read a million page essay on the creation of the LCD moniter I just want some straight up quickie answers to look for in a moniter... I'm looking for an 18" + sized LCD screen for a casual gamer (mostly Counter Crack) and occasional DVD on the comp... I'm partial to the Sony name and been looking at This one for awhile now. Seems decent enough to me but not too sure... Anyone tell me what to look for in an LCD?

I know there are millions of threads out there on this same topic but i'm just too lazy to look for them =P

S81/M81 is old model, you should get the new X81.

Better - Samsung 181T, Eizo L665, NEC 1850X, 1880SX, Philips 180P2M, 180P2G, 180P2B.

But doesn't the new Sonys have worse response times than the old models? Who made the LCDs for the new models anyway...is it still Philips? My guess is Sony is just getting started... while others are already way ahead.

Correction: should be X82.

Yes, 50ms total response time, but better viewing angle, luminance, pixel pitch, and added dvi.

Since you play counter-crack, you definitely want a monitor with 30ms or less TOTAL response time else you see ghosting on the screen.

Well, I can only speak from personal experience, I have the prophetview 720 and it is a GREAT monitor, absolutly perfect but scince you're looking at something better, I might be able to reccomend the prophetview 920 IF it has the same response time etc as this one (no ghosting whatsoever)

I currently have a Viewsonic VX2000 on the way to my dorm. It's a very stylish 20 Inch LCD, with a 600:1 contrast ratio! I'll give an update when it gets here, but it has 25 ms total response time, plus "3X-LCD" and "Super Clear MVA" which are varients of new technology to give a clearer picture, especially with moving objects. I plan to use it for gaming (BF1942, UT2003, MMORPGs) and TV/DVD watching. Its also HDTV ready, by the way, so that suggests that Viewsonic believes its response time is sufficient to deal with such fast moving images. Once again, i'll give an update when it gets here, but from my research it seems to be the best choice.

EDIT: on pricewatch.com, you can find it for about $1500

I have the Samsung 181T, it's a great monitor for everything. 25ms response times, 500:1 contrast ratio, DVI and Analog....I love it. It works great for gaming too! Very little ghosting at all if any in UT2K3 in even the fastest deathmatches!!! The best part was that when I opened the box and cut it on...not even one dead pixel...nor have there beeen any since! All in all this is an awesome monitor....definately the way to go!
