Indeed, Jawbox, one of Washington D.C.'s finest and most influential post-punk bands, began exactly where you would expect: at Dischord Records. According to the 30 Years of Dischord compilation's booklet, Ian MacKaye met future Jawbox bassist/DeSoto Records co-owner Kim Coletta at a party in D.C.'s Burleith neighborhood, and subsequently hired her to help Dischord with distribution. After Robbins' band, Government Issue, broke up, he began playing guitar with Coletta in what would eventually become Jawbox. They played their first show in 1989, opening for Fugazi. Jawbox would go on to release two full-length LPs on Dischord before signing with Atlantic to release their finest record, For Your Own Special Sweetheart, and their self-titled swan song, both of which have since gone out of print.

Kim Coletta intends to rectify this oversight in 2004. According to the official DeSoto website, she has recently acquired the rights to For Your Own Special Sweetheart and Jawbox from Atlantic, and will be reissuing both records on DeSoto later this year. The reissues will "hopefully" be packaged with bonus DVD material, according to a Billboard interview with Coletta. "I'm hoping the extra material will be live video footage," Coletta said. "Maybe we'll do a package that contains a music CD and a DVD, but try to keep it as cheap as possible."

Billboard also reports that J. Robbins's new band, Channels, will release their debut EP, Open, via DeSoto on September 7th. Channels features Robbins' wife, Janet Morgan, on bass and vocals, and Darren Zentek (Oswego, Kerosene 454) on drums. The new group has recently played shows in D.C. and New York with Pilot to Gunner, The Beauty Pill, Retisonic, and others.

And finally, a little tidbit for your own special munchkin: As reported ages ago in the Pitchfork news annals, Coletta is finally gearing up to release a series of children's records recorded with friend Susie Tennant. Coletta says of the series, "Our main goal is to release a record that will appeal to both kiddies and their parents." The first record in the series will be titled Play, and will feature upbeat (natch) original songs and covers. DeSoto is aiming for an early 2005 release for the project.

why the hell would anyone making a punk-oriented band name their band jawbox, when the hugely influential jawbreaker was doing their thing already.

From the same article..

Here's a fun Jawbox trivia fact: In an interview several years ago, Jawbox/Burning Airlines leader and producer extraordinaire J. Robbins told me that the band was originally going to be called "Jawbreaker," but that he stumbled across the then-inchoate Jawbreaker's Whack and Blite EP and was sufficiently impressed by it to not use the name. Picture the young and inexperienced music writer in exquisite agony, sitting with a veritable paragon of the D.C. indie rock scene and receiving such a glittering jewel of indie rock ephemera! The un-jaded heart could die of such riches (cue harps)...

The two bands formed at essentially the same time on opposite coasts.

Okay, I'll take this to mean none of you have ever heard of Jawbox. :p

Oh well, they're worth a look IMO.
