About four days ago, I shut down my computer, waited for it to log off and shut down normally, and then walked away.
The next day I went to boot my computer up, and it got to the hardware load screen listing
my various hardware, but in the middle of that load screen, the screen blamed out, and was thereafter replaced by a screen I had never before seen.
It was basically a blank black screen that showed a series of horizontal bars up about an inch from the bottom. The bars were about 5/8 high and about 3/32" wide, separated by a space and then another white bar went from the left screen border all the way to the right screen border. After waiting for quite a while, and no further progress, I pressed CtrAltDelete which booted the computer again. But again same end screen with white bars extending left to right. At times there would be further load progress as the series of bars would turn all solid white extending left to right a whole 2 inches, but then all loading stopped. Other times I got no bars or just a series of of alternate bars from left to right.
So I again rebooted, went to my bios screen and reloaded bios defaults. Which changed nothing. Same results. Then I got my windows XP pro install disk and let it recheck my hardware without reloading windows. As the reload process went to finish which implied no unrecognized hardware. Then went to the C/windows dir, and it read out the various files and showed my HDD was still working and still showed it had about all its original content. But still no help, same behavior as before when I rebooted.
Then I loaded memtest86 to test my 2 gigs of ram, and let it go through all eight tests without a single error. Then I ended the mem test program, and to my surprise and delight,
the computer booted right up and ran flawlessly. Now I have gone through many shut down reboot processes since then and have not experienced any more failures. And yes I rescanned for malware, checked cpu and hardware temps, and basically found nothing for a cause.
Can anyone explain why my puter did this and if there is anything I should replace to prevent re-occurance.
