Are there any Indians on this forum?
India is one hell of a place to live for tech geeks... :(
If any NRIs based in the US are here..
They can help in bringing some tech stuff (from newegg etc..) for Indians (when they come to India ie.) ..
This is because the Indian customs/duty are so hefty that the product will end up doubly priced...

So you want someone to smuggle electronics into india for you and all your buddies in order to avoid customs duty. Sounds illegal and you sound stupid.

fyi: this forum is probably 30% indian.

Dot or feather?

As someone else here put it:

Casino or Slurpie :D

I am of the Casino people. My grandmother was full blooded Indian so I have enough in me to file paperwork if I wanted to.

Indian here (in India)

Have you tried ExcaliberPC.com? They ship internationally and you will only have to pay a nominal shipping fee. Look them up on ResellerRatings.com

And yeah, I know what it's like to walk into a B&M store out here and see a $150 graphic card listed for $350. I rely on friends/family in the US to buy stuff from Newegg - might give ExcaliberPC a try some time.

His point is that he is wondering if any Indians are greater than a question mark. Didn't you read the Topic? Duh.... :p

Better idea... get a bunch of friends together, load up a suitcase with indian sweets, come visit the US and give sweets to ATOTers, buy a crapload of tech gear, load up the suitcase, go home, profit.

When I've checked around, prices weren't that much different. What was hard though, was finding parts from a major brand or something a bit more specific, like DDR RAM at a certain speed. I checked around for power supply's once in India and had trouble finding anything besides some cheap house brand. It seems that most people in India would rather just buy whatever is as cheap as possible even if it won't last for a long time.

Do you blame them? My family lives in Gujarat and the dust is brutal on the computers there. Even if you buy an expensive piece or a cheap piece; the dust kills it. Why buy expensive stuff?

And some things are expensive, like DVD Players, phones, and TVs. We get the stuff tons cheaper in the US. We almost always take some form of electronics with us when we go, be it a dvd player or cordless phone. Last time we took a HHD disk and digital camera since they asked for it, but thats for family.

Otherwise, i agree with you. Getting a name brand of something is hard. I went looking for MiniDv tapes while I was there since i ran out. Yeah, couldn't find one for a while, but when i did the price was actually really close to what it is here.

btw, what is the point of this thread?

better get stuff from taiwan/hongkong, better prices than US, normally I take a lot of stuff when I go to india, if you dont take the boxes/packaging for the items, customs wont bother you. Also the way dollar has fallen or rupee has increased in value recently, its not a whole lot cheaper to buy stuff here and take anymore

Dust kills them? First, you can clean it. Second, you can use fan filters. Third, how often does dust damage a good PSU?

You take things like digital cameras with you? When was this? I never really paid attention a while ago, but the past few years, things haven't been much cheaper here, if at all.

I was talking about more expensive products when I meant finding a certain brand. 4 years ago or so when I went on a trip, I tried asking if they carried Enermax or Antec and they hadn't ever heard of either. People there just use whatever they're handed because it's a power supply.

Overall, to me, it seems that people don't care to ever buy a premium product. It's not the consumer's fault though... that's just how the market is, and I'm not sure I understand it. I'll stop here on that last thought I just said, it's a whole can of worms and don't want to get into that right now :p

That, plus I'm not sure I agree with taking things just because of a difference in price. If we're talking about a $400-$500 difference, then yeah, but just to save $50 or less, not worth it IMO. If you wanted to just give the item to them as a present and not accept money, then that's different, but taking a product overseas in an effort to save $30 or something isn't worth it, IMO.

I've heard of a lot of things killing a PC, but never dust.

I usually take stuff i cant easily find back in India, or normally stuff that I buy on black friday or something, when its really cheap
