About 2 -3 times a week, I get a phone call that ends up being a fax. This has been going on for about 3 months now. When I check the caller ID, it always says "Out of Area". This is not a big deal, but it is getting annoying. Any ideas?

check with the phone company and see if they can get the number
if it turns out to be a fax machine, fire up a fax machine and tape 3 sheets of paper together. put the first page in and start the fax and as soon as the first page comes out, tape it to the 3rd page so you have a loop
leave it faxing for a couple of hours :)

Heh - I read about a woman who had a home office phone line that got a fax-type noise phone call every week for over a year - she didn't figure it out until she asked the phone company to trace it. They traced it to an empty oil tank in the basement of a farmhouse several states away - this oil tank was equiped with a computer that was programmed to call the headquarters when the tank was empty. Unfortunately the oil company had long gone out of business and thier 1-800 phone number had been re-assigned to, you guessed it, this lady's home business!

So thanks to modern technology, this disused oil tank was able to harass someone 500 miles away! :)

The moral of the story? Call the phone company! :)

If you can transfer the call to a fax machine, you can then receive the fax. You probably could figure out what to do to get your number off the list based on what the fax says.

Use call forwarding to send the fax to a line that has a fax machine. Once you get the fax, you can usually trace where it came from as it should have return phone info in the header. One other idea is to use another phone company feature, call return. Perhaps someone there will answer the phone when it rings. Even if it is a fax, we normally answer the phone when we hear someone speaking into the machine.

Some dingbat called me at 3:59 Monday morning. I think they asked for "Josh," that's about all I remember. That and looking at the clock & wanting to kill somebody.
