any ideas how to improve video playback on toshiba satellite?

i just finished setting up my laptop and was thoroughly disgusted how slow these things are. gaming was never an option, i just wanted to be able to watch videos on the go, and little i knew when i assumed celeron 800 would be sufficient for most things. the real problem i neglected however, seems to be this trident cyberblade integraded video card. any wmv9/xvid/dvix video file reults in a slide show 🙁 things improved slightly when i used gomplayer instead of ffdshow and used the driver found on the toshiba support site. are these things supposed to be this slow? would i see any gain if i installed linux instead? thanks in advance.

if all else fails, i might consider upgrading to a better computer. what would be the most inexpensive upgrade that wouldnt stutter with wmv9/ogm videos?

just discovered IBM t22, which was another candidate i was considering has s3 (unichrome i am guessing) video controller. unicromes played videos just fine, i shot myself in the foot by going with the toshiba 🙁

No. Your laptop can't do it. It's too much for the poor thing. Sell it on ebay and get a better one.

duron 800 was more than enough for most non-hd video. people watch relatively lower quality stuff on p2-450s, i dont see why celeron 800 wouldnt be able to handle it. is cyberblade vga controller THAT bad?

thx for help everyone, i figured it out... it was the cooling method optioini in the BIOS. wording was confusing at best since you get to choose between "maximum performance" and "battery optimized". i assumed by maximum performance they meant just maximum cooling performance.. silly me 😛 now its running pretty ok, getting about 35-45fps with fog/special effects disabled. videos run good enough to watch as well 😀
