Any idea why I get this screen on start up?

I'm using Windows XP, an Intel P4 with 1gb Ram and Nod 32 Antivirus program
On starting the PC and after the Microsoft XP splash screen, I get this window, not always, but only sometimes:

http://tinyurl.com/d9ydo

The only way I can close this window, is to click the OK button that appears on the screen.
Once this window closes, the desktop with my icons appear and all is well with the PC.

Any idea why this occurs? Grateful if someone can help.

Thanks in advance
Regards

I suspect malware is the cause. I recommend a full scan with the free Trend Micro Housecall virus scanner, followed by a full scan with Ad-Aware, Spybot, and/or Microsoft AntiSpyware. As always, after installing the anti-spyware programs, you'll want to run them in Safe Mode w/Networking.

Thanks for your reply!
The Nod32 antivirus that I have installed is the latest version available
and is reputed to be a very good anti-spyware program also. But to
answer your question I have not scanned the system with a dedicated
anti spyware program. Will do it if nothing else helps.

Thanks for your very helpful reply!
To do what you have suggested, should I disable
the resident Antivirus program? I am sorrry I am
not very knowledgeable on these issues.
I read somewhere that having such different
programs can cause conflicts and hence my doubt.
Also when I was installing the Nod32 AV program I
did not disable/uninstall Grisoft AVG and McAfee AV
programs due to which my system 'hung' for several
minutes, after which everything came back to normal.

You need to get AVG and McAfee off of your system. You may have a conflict with three AV programs loaded.

One easy way of deleting AVG and McAfee is to d/l Startup Control . When you run the download, it will install itself in your Control Panel. Go into it and uncheck all files having to do with AVG and McAfee - this will prevent them from loading on startup. Reboot and then run Add/Remove Programs and remove AVG and McAfee and reboot.

If you're still getting the weird prompt at startup, follow the steps that sykopath79 posted.

If that doesn't work, post again.

I am sorry I did not make myself clear.
I have already de-installed AVG and McAfee AV programs
and now have only one AV program residing in my PC which is Nod32
My question is, should I now remove Nod32 AV program
from my PC to carry out sykopath79's instructions?
Thanks and regards

This looks like an empty legal notice window. Not sure if it's a virus or adware generating it. Try searching in the registry for "legalnotice" and look for "legalnoticecaption" and "legalnoticetext". Check google or MS KB to see if you can delete these entries in the registry or put a null value in them. If this is a work PC and you are on a network like AD it could be causing this to happen.

AFTER the spyware scan, I recommend a FULL virus scan in SAFE MODE.

The troublesome window appears even when I boot the PC in the safe mode. I have run MS's anti spyware (Beta), Spybot S&D, and finally the NOD32 AV utility. After much searching on the net, I am fairly certain it is the LegalCaptionNotice window and now need to learn, how to get rid of it. I am saving your detailed spyware removal instructions , which IMHO, is a masterpiece! Many thanks for your help!

As mentioned in my reply to'Flying Penguin', I think both you and 'Dahak' are absolutely correct in thinking it is an empty legal caption window. The window appears even when I boot up in the Safe mode. So now I have to learn how to remove it. Can you please tell me what is MS KB? Thanks for your help.

Hi Dahak!

I looked up the info you gave me for the registry keys. It shows how to set up a warning notice window not how to remove it. Not sure if I am missing something, but please remember I am a newbie! Very grateful for your help!

An update:

I deleted (after backing up) the LegalNoticeCaption and LegalNoticeText entries from the Registry. This did not help, as the annoying window still keeps rearing it's ugly head!! :disgust:

Thank you for your reply.
I did check and you are right as the default setting
for those registry keys is nothing.
However when I check the binary date it shows
0000 00 00. Whatever that's supposed to mean! :)
Anyway, as mentioned I have deleted those key values
but it has not solved the problem. Thanks again.
