So, it's kinda in the area (Northeast at least)
I'm pretty sure it's a possum, unless its tail had been damaged through some weird accident. Here's one walking on a fence, you can see the profile matches quite well, particularly the tapered head and skinny tail.
Fishers are fairly common in this area, though their tales are bushier. I've seen them a few times in the woods. And, it's really cool (and makes the hair stand up on your neck) to hear a fisher within 50-100 yards of you, when you're outside at night well away from the city, in the woods, in the dark. You can google the sound they make. Fox also make a similar sound. To be walking in the dark and hear either is rather chilling.
