Shut up already. You type and sound like a 12 year old trying to show off to a computer forum.

Why should everyone even need an expensive computer tester to reprogram their ecu's just to get their cars to run longer, anyway.

He makes it sound like anyone with half a brain can fix anything on a car. He is wrong.
You mean like an OBD scanner? Sure, thoes can be had on the cheap. What else do I need beyond that? I don't program my own ECU and I don't know of a single shop that needs to just for repairs. The only programming you need to do is if you want to modify your car for performance. A ECU reflash can be done for a couple hundred dollars. Though a reflash is nothing your run of the mill shop is going to do for a REPAIR. If the ECU is broken you buy a new one, you can even ask your "father" that.

You can fix the VAST majority of problems on a car without extremely expensive computer scanners. Sure some very technologically advanced cars today may need special equipment, but they are in the minority. Though if you read carefully (which children like you never do) I said that "any monkey with a full set of tools" can fix just about anything. A full set of tools would include most of the typical computer scanners your typical shop has today. You don't even need a computer do do alignment. If a sensor is broken, you replace it, you don't need a billion dollar computer to tell you that.

I'm with kelvrick on this one. You're a full of sh!t kid trying to be some hardass fanboy. I honestly don't believe you have a father who is a mechanic, because he wouldn't have a son who's head is so far up his ass when it comes to repairing vehicles.

I have two uncles who own shops and are full time mechanics. One is blood, one is marriage. One is a domestic mechanic and the other is strictly import (focusing on german). The uncle who does domestic (blood related) fixes all domestics and races GM on the dragstrip for fun. He drives imports for his daily driver car and domestics for his trucks. To quote him, "american is so much easier to work on, but I can get 150K miles out of my import before I even have to touch it".

find I'll stop replying after this.

Ok SampSon, first off when you say all this stuff about not needing special tools well you are wrong and I don't care what you think/care/say. If you want to fix quite a bit of electronics on cars you need to have a T1 or T2 to get an analysis what whats going wrong. Sure you can just replace parts but its not very cost effective if you are just guessing. Also you said: any monkey can fix it? I think not. I've seen lots of old guys come to both the Honda and the Chevy shop and bring in their car because they thought they could fix it themselves. Or else they come into the shops to ask the mechanics for answers on questions they have on their cars. If they need to keep asking mechanics questions over and over they should stop being so dam cheap and just bring it into the garage. And yes you can fix alot of things just in your own garage if you have your own tools, etc. But most people don't have hydrolic lifts in their garages and that makes working on alot of things not very convenient. So its not cost effective to fix some things on your car by yourself, even if you do have your manual.

You're a full of sh!t kid trying to be some hardass fanboy. I honestly don't believe you have a father who is a mechanic<--You shouldn' get worked up about someone stating their opinion and then calling them a hardass fanboy. I myself think both Chevy and Ford are very nice brands. I drove a Dodge truck that was a 04 and it was not near as nice of shifting as Ford or Chevy. I've driven Honda, etc. and they too drive pretty nice. Also to end my final reply my father is a mechanic though I'm sure you don't believe me.

I hope the OP will find a great buy and won't have too much trouble with whatever car he chooses to buy.

go for a Chevy or Ford or GMC

can you explain why ? Im leaning towards an import. Though some new domestic cars are looking better.

The economy need help. Buying Imports does not help at all. Have you not heard about ford and gmc closing plants? Also my dad has worked at both Honda and now a Chevy Garage for over 20 years and overall he thinks Fords or Chevys are better than say Honda/ Imports. They reasoning is that they last longer. Take more abuse. Though the Honda will run great for a long long time if you do the maintaining on it. But see that maintaining is expensive on those imports like honda, etc. They use belts when chevy uses chains, etc. So you have to replace the parts or else you may end up spending alot more than just a belt.

what is this then?

This maintenance thing is kind of moot anyways, most new cars don't need anything besides consumables for the first 100K miles anyways.

And yes, I change my own oil, tranny fluid, brakes, blah blah.

BMW had the Z4 ragtop for $299 a month for 27 months, 10k per year and all maintenance incl., until last Friday (I just missed it). Supposedly going to return in a week or so.
