You're in the market for a fake truck?

What exactly are you looking for?

The avalanche isn't really a fake truck - it's just got half an SUV body on the truck frame.

In all fairness, 80% of people who buy pickups in this country would be better off with an avalanche type vehicle instead, with more seating and less bed.

That 80% of the population buys regular pickups anyway, because they like to talk about how vehicles like the avalanche are fake.

Although, there's still no real reason to buy the avalanche over a big sedan (or even better, a station wagon) that will be more comfortable, faster, and more economical.

That said, it's his money, his purchase, his gas bill, etc. so if he's oddly attracted to the avalanche there's no reason to come down on him for it. I made my own irrational purchase because I thought 90-97 town cars were completely awesome, so I bought one. Should I have bought a civic/accord/camry/focus instead? Yes. Do I regret my purchase? Not even a little.

I used to have a 2003 2500 Avalanche with the 8.1L. It was not a fake truck by any means. :( Sold it to get a more "family" friendly vehicle. I miss it. I'll say this about the avalanche: It had a way better ride than any truck I'd been in, and you could still pull anything with it.

The avalanche is a great truck by any means. No, you can't get it with an 8ft bed, but most people don't need that anyway. If you're going to be hauling stuff all the time, get a pickup. If you want a people-hauler that's good for the occasional working duty, the avalanche is an easy pick.

WTF!!! How dare you suggest that Americans consider their needs when purchasing a vehicle!!! Next you'll be spouting off about the environment and hugging trees you pinko commie bastard! :|

So what if someone needs an SUV? Oh, right, you'll judge them as being a horrible person for driving an SUV.

Nobody needs an SUV. 20 years ago nobody knew what the fuck an SUV was yet somehow we all managed to get by.

Nobody needs a car with a comfy ride either. Or AC. Or a lot of things that many didn't have 20 years ago but we have now.

Fail.

Are you out of your mind? We didn't have cars with a comfy ride or AC 20 years ago? Dude...we had that 30 years ago...even 40 years ago.

d'oh. Should have clarified. The comfy ride or AC wasn't connected to the 20 years ago part necessarily.

Point still remains. We don't need that stuff. But we have it. And so do you, and you like it and use it.

I still don't get why you hate them so much that you feel no one should be able to own one. Ok, you don't like them, so don't buy one. But this guy does. Why does it bother you so much that people like and drive vehicles you don't like? I hate the prius but that doesn't mean I want nobody to be able to drive one.

Just curious, what are people getting out of SUVs today that they weren't getting out of cars 20 years ago? Hint: Sitting up higher and getting a more commanding view of the road doesn't count. Tipping over easily doesn't count either. Getting worse mileage definitely doesn't count. :p

4x4. Most cars don't have that option. AWD is slowly becoming a little more available on cars but doesn't always cut it (what good is AWD when you bottom out?)
Cargo space. Try fitting that new fridge or washer or whatever inside your sedan ;)
Passenger space, depending on the SUV of course. But no sedan is going to have the capacity for 6+ people comfortably.
Hauling. Try towing a trailer with a car. Doesn't usually work too well.
Why doesn't sitting higher count? Sure can help. I like my car but sometimes I do wish I sat higher to be able to see around some hills and things better.

Hmmm... you have four kids, and run a landscaping company, but don't have the money to keep two vehicles on the road. What's your solution? Minivan can't pull that, pickup can't take that many people. Feel free to swap in different trailer types, add some children, put yourself in charge of the local Boy Scout/Girl Scout troop... it goes on and on.

correct. we have two minivans. I do have a utility trailer, we kayak, camp, haul mulch, dirt, lumber gravel, trees, etc.

We have 3 kids that cannot drive. We two minivans, although it is very functional..it has a tough time pulling the trailer loaded up with the family and gear in it. A recent trip with trailer and one kid, led to around 12-13 mpg in my van...pretty hard on it as well. Yes Jules, not everyone shares your anti bullshit "i have a maxima, but i want a beemer!" attitude. we all got by on a great deal less a long time ago. you go back to horse and buggy if you want, and quit spewing your predictable, i hate everything larger than my car crap.

I drive the Escalade version of the Avalanche. It is a great vehicle to drive and very versatile.
