Any help with point-and-shoot cameras? Preferably Canon.

I want to buy my sister a camera, and have had good experiences with Canon in the past, but after i bought my camera a few years ago, i never kept up with the new model #s.

Can anyone help me find a good deal for a camera thats considered decent please? She wants to spend about $150 (but willing to spend more).

thanks a lot!!

I'd go with either the Canon SD780 ($180) or the Canon SX200 ($280). The SD780 is the slim version; the SX200 adds a 12x zoom and really great macro, plus a bit more manual functions in video mode. Video is really great. My buddy has the 780 and I have the 200, both are superb.

For a girl, I'd recommend the 780 because it's actually pocket-sized (almost the exact same size as the iPhone) and takes really great pictures and pretty good 720p video. Easy to slip into jeans and go anywhere (vs. the SX200 which is a fatty and really only fits in jacket pockets haha).

thanks man! she wants it to have a big screen is another stipulation lol.

i was looking at the SD1400IS. I really have NO idea wtf is going on with these model #s...Canon used to make sense but now i have no idea at all in what order these are supposed to be. I'll def. check the SD780 out.

LCD on the SD780 is 2.5", which is pretty big - not 3", but pretty decent compared to older cams.

I did a lot of research on pocket cams when I bought my SX200 a couple months ago. The SD780 is very, very close in quality; the SX200 is much larger, but also gives you a bigger zoom and slightly better video quality, plus a really excellent macro (I bought it for video, which is why I went with the SX200). I do kinda wish I had a 780 because the SX200 doesn't fit in my pocket (it stays in my bag), so it's not *quite* as handy. The 780 is *extremely* slim, which is a huge plus.

If you are going up to $250 then take a look at the Panasonic DMC-ZR3. It's comparable in size and weight to the Canon Elphs but it will give you 24mm wide angle photos at 16:9 ratio as well as 8 magnitude telephoto which is one of the highest for such a compact camera. It has improved image stabilization. It gives you High Definition video in a special AVCHD video format which allows you to record twice as much video as the Canon video format and also has stereo sound. It will record video while zooming in and out which Canon doesn't. And it also has a dedicated video button for video recording. You can also set it to use manual settings if you know what you are doing. Photos are said to be as good as if not better than Canons since it uses the highly rated German Leica lens.
