Any help finding a case?

I was wondering if anyone has some case suggestions for me.

I've run into an interesting problem in that my chosen power supply (PC Power and Cooling 850) is 230 mm (about 9 inches) long and is way too big for the case I had in mind. It pushes up way too close to the optical drives and there was just no clearance for any cabling or air flow.

Anyone have any ideas on some good cases that aren't too expensive? I found the Silverstone TJ07, but at abou $300 that seems a bit steep (well, not to me but the wife may wonder). Motherboard is Gigabyte GA-M59SLI-S5.

Thanks,

Rob

Were you looking at the P180? I could see how the clearance would be a problem. I'd say that any case that mounts the PSU on the top of the case would work. Or you could just check the dimensions and look for a fairly deep case.

Welcome to the AT Forums.

It would make things easier on us if we had more detail on your application, what you need/want in appearance features (window, door, rice, bling, etc.). If you need another ePeePee (like the PCP&C 850 or the TJ07) or if a case that just has great functionality would do? Or you could just give us your short list and let us nitpick those - by far the easiest on us.
. In any case, take a look at my Rosewill thread and see if anything there rings your chimes - functional and good-looking cases that leave most of your money in your wallet for the important stuff. And there is the Tj05 - a nice bridge between ePeePee and high-value cases.

Personally if money was no object and I was contemplating an over-the-top system, I'd get a CoolerMaster Stacker (STC-T01), one Enhance ENP-5150GH PSU from eWiz (or the Silverstone version if you want prettier) and one relatively quiet, single 12V rail PSU of 400W or so (say a Zippy GSM-6550P(G1)) (total of around 1kW for under $200. and a real 76A @ +12V between them) for the foundation. The reason I say single rail is that you can adapt ANY wire coming off that PSU to ANY appropriate purpose, unlike most split-rail PSUs. Last I knew, Zippy ( http://www.zippy.com ) wasn't importing any (or many) of their Gaming series here, but if you can't find one in the channel, you can call them direct (their East coast rep was very friendly the several times I talked with him) and get one with identical internals, but perhaps w/o some of the cosmetics (black paint (will be nickel plated instead), sleeving, etc.).

Ok, so here's a little more information:

I already have a the PPC 850 on hand, so I need the case to work around that. As to appearance, I really don't care too much as the machine will be sitting in a home office.

Since my initial posting, I've also discovered the Lian Li PC-G70 which might have hit the sweet spot ($179) with areas for a PSU at both the top and bottom.

So here's the short list:

Lian Li PC-G70
Silverstone TJ07

(and of course, any write in candidates)

Please nitpick away, as I've never used either of these manufacturers before.

Thanks again!

Aerocool CoolView or Masstige (Bay Dream). With the CoolView you basically get a $40. GateWatch, software controlled, temp and fan speed monitor/control system w/ LCD display; a door and top mounted ports for free over the Masstige. I call 'em the "poor man's Stackers" as they have ten 5" drive bays. I'd use a Lian Li 34 or a CM 4-in-3 module in these for rubber isolation and quieter cooling for the HDDs. I'd remove the fans and block off the three 80mm fan ports on both sides.

iStar Nitro

Silverstone Temjin 5 (can be had w/o window) - has convenience features that the Tj07 lacks (and shouldn't for $300.!).

The LL G70 has no rubber isolation for the HDDs, no rails for ease of instaling opticals. All it has is some thumbscrews. If a case doesn't make your life easier, why bother? Pretty much dittos with the Tj07. Both are pretty ePeePees.

As many know on AT, my preferences are Lian-Li. The LL PC-7B +2 is my first for any new rig start.
