Yes, the ammonia neutralizes the salts from the primers.

I tend to use hot water once I get home if I shoot anything I suspect might be corrosive. Also, I always wipe down the bolt face as well just in case.

I have a cheap used mossberg maverik that I love. It is a great all purpose 12 gage and works good for clays, birds, and rabbits. Plus I dont mind beating it up a bit, it only cost me $100. Get something utilitarian to start out with. Buying a fancy firearm to actually *use* is like waxing your 4x4, kind of pointless.
