Basically I've decided this would be an enjoyable thing(s) to have around for traget shooting and clays for a shotgun. Since I have no previous gun ownership experience I figure I should limit myself to a low cost gun (under 400, which includes used guns), but need something more than the plinker .22s which I have extensive prior experience with.
Does anyone have any suggestions or good websites to check out?
Since I am under 21 any rifle must be capabale of holding no more than 10 rounds under MA law.

Find a used SKS for around $150. Then buy 1000 rounds for around $150. Have much fun for a long time.

The SKS is a great gun for plinking around with. Cheap, reliable, sora accurate, and semi-automatic. Legal to hunt with, cheap to shoot, and easy maintence. Plus, if you want to be a gansta, there are custom stocks and such available to soup it up.

Cheaper than dirt

I was exploring the SKS and had two concerns. If I'm not mistaken they can accept a 30rd mag (making ownership for me out of the question), and secondly that the majority of them require solid gun tinkering skills to fix up, which I have yet to develope.

Good site though, thanks!

What do you intend to shoot with this gun?

If clays are your interest then a rifle isn't for you.

If you want a decent shotgun, the Remington 870 Express is a good buy. I shouldn't even be talking about models... anything Remington, Winchester, or Ithaca is great in the way of shotguns.

My suggestion is to go to a local gunshow and just browse around. You can hold and see exactly what you are buying, and there is no waiting period. Take cash, walk out with gun and ammo.

I am interested in purchasing both a shotgun and a rifle. The big question for shotguns is what design, the question for rifles is what is a solid yet cool gun that is capable of holding no more than 10 rounds.

The SKS comes with a fixed 10 round magazine, it will be legal as long as you don't modify it. They are super reliable and you shouldn't have to tinker with it at all. Simple, reliable, and cheap.

Get that and a mossberg 500.

Prolly the only way you'll stay under 400 for both.

I shoot skeet and sporting clays alot. If you are looking for a pump shotgun, the Remington 870 is good. For semi auto, get something like a Remington 1100, used Beretta 390, Benelli M1 etc. For over/unders get something like a used browning citori, older beretta 68x series. Go to Gunsamerica, they have a ton for sale.

I thought MA had the 10 rd law sunset-ed so you could buy the bigger clips??

-Then again, I haven't bought anything since my twin 25 clips for my 18th birthday

For those ages 18-20.99 I believe it is still maximum of 10 rounds. I would be thrilled to be disproved :)

SKS's are great fun but nowhere near as accurate as pretty much any AR.

Too bad you don't live in Canada... believe it or not. You can by a Norinco M14 clone for $300 US, and even though it is Chinese, is a utterly great rifle.

For plinking though, I still think the .22LR is king even though you don't want one.

A Thompson Center Classic would be my next rifle if I were in the market.

If you're worried about the 10rd issue, can't you just buy 10rd magazines? If not, you're stuck with shotguns and rifles with internal non-detachable magazines..for the most part, anyways.

Where? :D

For a shotgun, I would go with the Benelli Nova pump-action 12 guage. Its extremely light and you can probably find it below the $400 dollar range, even with camo print. A very versatile gun.

For a rifle, I would go with the Ruger Mini-14 iwith blued finish. It is .223 caliber. Stainless would probably be too much. It's not an AR-15 but it is very fun and pretty accurate. Its also a heck of a lot more reliable than any AK's on the market. The big brother is the Mini-30 that shoots 7.62x39mm.

Personally I would go with the shotgun, you can shoot a lot more places safely and it's more versatile if you ever want to hunt. And you can't skeet shoot with a mini-30.

The Mini-14 is a decent, reliable but overpriced and over-rated rifle.

A Mini is reliable allright, but MORE RELIABLE than any AK? You're joking, right?
