Ovation makes a high quality instrument out of woods (+plastic backs), metal reinforced necks, and high quality tuning machines for a very reasonable price. People may not like Ovation because of their unique shape (they backs are hard plastic domes that project the sound out the front), but you can't beat their build quality. I've still got my first Ovation Celebrity from 1982, and I still play it. It cost $180 back then (I think they're in the $300 range now).

Seagull makes fantastic guitars, and it's hard to believe they don't cost $500 more than they do.

yes, i never denied that the rogue wan't made out of laminates...at 79.99, it's meant as a beginner guitar. what it is, is a very playable guitar with decent sound for the price, relative to other popular beginner guitar brands.

compare that 79.99 rogue to any ovation under 400, and you'll be surprised. i have gotten a lot of flack for pushign this guitar, but i might buy one to make a recording so y'all can hear.

Try a local pawn shop. I've seen several in the ones in my area for good prices. If you think there's a good chance you may not stick with it, I'd avoid dropping a big wad of cash on one. Just find something that feels good when you're holding it, sounds decent and is in good shape. If after 6 months of playing you are still very interested, then invest in a better guitar.

Try the low end Washburns for a good starter guitar. They make good stuff for both beginners and advanced players.

My Daughter and I both learned to play on it and still pick it up on a weekly basis (or more) to play great sounding acoustic songs (Wish You Were Here, Tears In Heaven...etc).

Mmm, that Taylor does sound like a good idea for a travel guitar.

I will offer my standard reply

Buy used from a pawn shop! You will get a much better quality instrument for your given price range, and if it doesn't work out you will be able to sell it for what you paid. But you need to take an experienced player with you to help you pick one.

Any new acoustics <$500 are pretty much crap IMHO and have a terrible resale value.

Also consider a classical (nylon strings), they are great starter guitars and are much easier to play/learn than a steel string.

yeah a pawn shop is a good idea.

i don't recommend getting a classical guitar right away. You wanna train your fingers to play on steel strings so you build callouses and strength
