Yes - not really my kind of thing, but Chris Squire is (was?) an amazing bass player.

Tool has some songs that will make your subs work pretty hard.

Primus isn't really rock... I dunno what their genre is.. but if you like bass, then they are for you... heh
their bass lines are freakn suh-weet!!

can't forget red hot chili peppers either, but they are not rock very much either. some stuff is close, but not really what you are looking for is my guess.

Any particular songs to look for?

Just about any song Primus does has bass. The band revolves around Les Claypool. 'nough said.

Check out Rancid. Some good songs being Detroit, Radio, etc... pretty much all of them. His basslines are real melodic and fast.

Not sure if this qualifies as Rock.

If it does, try out the method Man CD from around '95. Maybe earlier than that. My room mate at collage had it and it had BASS!

If you think you can keep up with Flea, try the Peppers- Other Side. Not too complicated, until you get to the solo.

If you want more Les Claypool uber bass playing goodness, check out his side bands Sausage and Mr Oysterhead. Sausage is more like Primus, Mr Oysterhead is more mellow, and classic rock oriented. He partnered up with a fairly popular classic rock artist...name escapes me at the moment.

I've always thought Sweet child of Mine has a cool bass line...

But besides that, check out Tool(who is coming to tallahassee, woot!)

Don't forget Stu Hamm. When he's playing for Joe Satriani, his bass lines tend to be simplistic (duh) but his solo stuff is quite impressive.

I always liked Live for bass licks. Their Throwing Copper album has some great bass songs.
