Any good SUVs <= $25k?

Oh yeah, in that price range I'd say maybe a Nissan Xterra. I have had one for a few years and never had a problem with it. If you really need even more hauling room buy an inexpensive utility trailer (I got mine for about $450 total) so you can move bigger furniture. Just don't expect great gas mileage, it isn't gonna happen in any SUV I can think of.

The Xterra is pretty small isn't it? She'd be better off with a used Pathfinder.

I think the Xterra and Pathfinder are pretty much the same size,

I think and Xterra or used Pathfinder would be good. Element seems to be pretty roomy too.

The Xterra is a midsize SUV - it's only slightly smaller than the Pathfinder, although it has quite a bit less cargo room. Both of them are truck-based, though, so they have more off-road capability than she needs (and the gas mileage and on-road ride suffer a little because of that).

For $25k you can't buy a new SUV that is large AND worth owning.

Tell them that they'll get more of what they want for a minivan. Somehow I doubt they'll listen.

A 25k minivan will trounce a 25k suv in almost all ways: gas mileage, and carrying room being the primary ones. Oh, but it can't offroad, so I guess it's out, isn't it?

she would do better with a minivan or a station wagon. but if she absolutely must follow the herd off the SUV cliff, i'd recommend the honda element. comfy, roomy, and no soccer-mom image.

Ford Escape

I bought a Honda CR-V less than 2 months ago, and I've been very happy with it. I paid under 20k before TTL for an LX 4WD model with side air bags. The redesigned RAV4 is nice as well, but I liked the CR-V better. Not a big fan of the Ford Escape, it's a good value, but I plan on owning my vehicle for 150k miles and I'm just not confident that the Escape would be able to do that.
