I'm just temporarily living it up. Right now I'm using my Ph.D. in materials science at a high paying semiconductor company based in New York. This lifestyle will not last, but felt needed after paying back all of my student loans in the first year out here and after living the thrifty life for so long. When my lease ends I'm planning to move to a smaller less expensive place.

Personally, I would have gone with the high priced hookers route rather than rent an entire floor of a building with neighbors from hell for living it up, but to each his own I guess.
When I moved in there was a couple that rented the floors above me who worked as dignitaries at the UN. After a few weeks here they moved out and I got my current lot of neighbors.

I've sort of fallen for the whole 'talking about their feelings' thing that women do, so it's no hookers for me

Damn, I guess you did your homework, but it turns out that the Architects have moved down the block and I have a children development center on the floor below.

You?re a smart guy, you?ve got a Ph.D.. Your evil neighbours only got high school degrees. Figure it out and let us know.

I just looking for more angles. Right now I'm going the legal route, but wasn't sure if there was more I should be doing or ... well, just looking for ideas :)

And my neighbors are not evil, just far too self centered when it comes to sharing a living space.

The Children won't be any good for a fight. You'll need to get your upstairs neighbors registered as sex offenders, then they'll have to move.

In reality, you've done the nice stuff(asked the tenant, asked the landlord, called the cops) Now you start documenting and building a case. Just hope that the certified letter gets the landlords moving or you'll actually have to look up your renters rights and contact a lawperson.

You want action on part of the landlords? Wake their asses up in the middle of the night when they are playing their music, every time they mess with your stuff, every time they do something stupid.

You want action on part of the police? Call and get a police report filed every time they do something. It'll be great when they move out and get a background check for a new place, eh?

I've called them in the middle of the night a few times. The first time or two they called the neighbors upstairs and the music got turned down. While this worked at first, more often recently they have not been in town or are not answering their phone. I can understand why they don't want to encourage me on calling them in the middle of the night when they already loose sleep due to their three boys.

I can't believe neighbors like that. I've had them. The ones who feel the need to play loud ass music with the bass absolutely cranked, all day and night. It's mostly the bass, cause it travels so much. I don't need to tell these people they can't listen to music, but pounding bass from 11pm to 1am or later is ridiculous, and just as bad is their need to do the same when they get up at 7 or 8am. WTF?

It sucks when there's not much you can do, and they don't answer their doors when you knock (probably cause their music is too damn loud).

Definitely use ear plugs, although I've found if it is bass then they won't do anything. See if your living room or a couch is located somewhere in your place that is not as loud as your room. Perhaps that, ear plugs, and a fan running would drown out enough so you can get some sleep.

I really don't understand the people who do this. Shit for brains, that's for sure.

That's not your concern. A comfortable place to live is, and your landlord should be providing that based on you giving them your hard earned money every month.

First thing I would do is go down to your district police station and ask to speak to the Captain in charge. Call the police EVERY night they are being loud to the point of violating law/code. Captains don't want to be bothered with nonsense everyday when there is a relatively easy solution.

If that doesn't work giving your Councilman a call is worth a shot as well.

You have a PHD and live in an expensive place so they will assume you are fairly wealthy. Exactly the people who local politicians want to impress and be on their side. Bonus points for getting into a side conversation with them (don't want to be to forward) and doing a little subtle asskissing.

Say what you want about asskissing but when dealing with politicians it usually nets great results and a little asskissing sure beats the pain and expense of taking it to civil court, which is the next step.

The amount of effort and time you waste dealing with these cock****ers is better spent in finding a new place if you can. Obviously that isn't easy, so the next best thing is to enjoy effing them back and pray that them move out soon. We've had terrible neighbours for the past 15 years and all the complaints, cops and b!tching has done nothing. Best thing was when they voluntarily moved out. Oh, and last summer I personally dug up our front yard so they couldn't park on it anymore...

I have a loft, so there is nowhere to hide. And you're right, earplugs don't work when the bass is too loud :(

i'd probably send another certified letter stating that you will cease to pay rent until the issues have been addressed (and actually follow-through with it). said letter should contain all the details of the issues you've had, dates requested, landlord's responses, etc. that should definitely get your landlord's attention...

I've backed off on the political and police angle because while I do plenty of community work (and have met a lot of people through it), I don't see myself as getting too far ahead of an army recruiter in the world of public opinion.

They might be a little scared, but it think the prime motivator is that my neighbors are paying over $2k a month in rent.

Like other have suggested I would review the tenency laws in your area and go from there. Your best bet is to find a way to break the lease and move. Good luck, keep us posted.

Who cares about public opinion? You're only worried about the opinion of one or two people who can actually make things happen. To a local politician you are a potentially large campaign contributer. An Army recruiter probably isn't even a blip to him. Get yourself a sound meter so that you can prove they are actually breaking the law/code when you call the police. If he doesn't do anything go to an actual council meeting and raise hell. It is entirely to easy for them to make your relatively minor issue go away instead of listening to you bitch/make waves.

Or lawyer up.
