Does anyone know a good DVD burner that is SATA out? I saw one from Pioneer but it was $100. I was looking for something like the BENQ 1640 price range I already own IDE, $50 tops.

Im getting a new mobo with my C2D and only has 1 IDE won't work for me :(

Plextor FTW!!!! You're not going to find a SATA DVD burner for less than $50. Well not normally. I picked up my Plextor PX-7165A for $50 (cnd) :)

How is that working for you? my concern mainly is does windows detect it fine, and are sata cables long enough on it to reach mobo. Might just spend the extra cash

If you want less than $50, throw a SATA-IDE converter on a $30 NEC drive.

IIRC, all the current "SATA" drives just have a bridge to IDE.

Windows sees it fine. And it boots from CD/DVDs fine. As for the cable, a 3 foot cable is included.

That plextor is IDE not SATA, the sata plextor drives are denoted "sa" after the model number. So the 716sa or the more current 750sa. I believe that only plextor currently has them out. Why do you want sata? Did you run out of ide ports? Or do you seek better performance... b/c there is no peformance gain with sata optical drives.

Im going to get that GIGABYTE GA-965P-DS3 motherboard and only has 1 IDE connector on board. I have 2 IDE HD and 2 DVD burners drives.

Would it be cheaper/betteroff to just get some of those IDE-to-sata converters for hardrives/DVD drives? Im not sure how they work, or if they are reliable..

If someone gots experience with that do they work fine?

I welcome suggestions on how to go about this. :)

You can get a cheap PCI IDE controller, SATA burners, SATA to IDE converters... or how about SATA hard drives? For today only (I think) you can get a Seagate 400GB SATA drive from Outpost.com for $100 with free shipping.

DOH!!! Can't read. I should have typed 716SA. When I read the front of my drive last night, that S looked like a 5.

In my case, my 5 year old Pioneer burner is on its last legs. So I needed a new burner. And for $50 for a brand new SATA Plextor burner, it was a no brainer.

Well the 2 IDE hardrives i have work fine, no use getting rid of them...lol

I have the PCI slots used up already so can't get a controller card.

I think i just get a couple converters for hardrives, make it painless process.

Im kinda reluctant on these converters to sata interface..the ones i've seen on newegg don't get very good praise. They require there own power? weird. Maybe its better in long run if i just get a new HD

I didn;t think there was a speed increase from IDE to sats optical drives... 52x is 52x , and 16x is 16x isn't it? or am i wrong?

There are Plextor and Samsung. Samsung's SATA drives are called 183A and 183M (without and with LightScribe, respectively), 18x DVD burners with 12x DVD-RAM support.

I'm currently using the IDE version 182M, and must say it's rather excellent. They retail for the equivalent of less than $50, including extra bezels in silver and black and the entire Nero OEM suite.

Previous generation 16x DVD and 5x DVD-RAM was called 163A (no LightScribe enabled version available).

No speed increase snes tor, just the easy factor of them vs IDE for upgrading.

Peter: Thanks for info, I can't seem many of them for sale. Hopefully they catch on soon.

The 183A just starts appearing on shelves here in Germany, the 183M isn't here yet.

btw, these 18x burners are very close to hitting the ceiling on their interface speed (they're UDMA mode 2, "UDMA33"), and if you think about putting one into an external USB enclosure, make sure you get one with a /really/ good USB-IDE controller inside.
Samsung also make their own external version (184 series) - unfortunately USB-only, no 1394, but at least the USB is fast enough for the unit.

I've had a PX712SA since November, and you are right, all I gained was a smaller cable and the Plextor reliability, which makes me happy.

There isn't any real speed increase, but you no longer have to worry about bus contention between two IDE devices. The cabling is also much easier to work with, and it'll last you longer into the future (until we all start using BluRay and/or HD-DVD, I suppose).
