Any good reasons to own Voodoo2 along with a GTS?

I currently have a Celeron 533@800 with 128MB RAM and a GTS card. I was thinking that I could find some uses for a Voodoo2 if I had one (Glide screensavers, upcoming BeOS OpenGL support, or maybe UT in 800x600?). With 12MB Voodoo2s going for around $35, is it worth picking one up to add some flavor to my system or would it be a total waste? If any of you have a Voodoo2 along with a Geforce card, what do you use the Voodoo2 for (other than a paperweight :))?

Paperweight. The only reason to own a 3DFX product is to play EQ in glide mode. Other than that? Nada.

I *really* think that'd be a waste...GTS is fast enough for UT anyway.....but ok if you really need glide, or maybe to run some older apps made for 3dfx then it might be an idea......depends on your needs :)

It would be a bit of a waste since you have a GTS card, but then if you buy 2 for SLI, you might get some interesting results. Nice to put in a secondary system though.

But from what I can see of your system, you might even want to consider a Glide Wrapper if you REALLY want Glide support.

By the end of this week I'll have a GF2 GTS. I also have a 12 MB Voodoo2 SLI setup, & I plan to keep it. I don't need the slots (I have 6, after all), & proper Glide support is nice. I still enjoy the occasional legacy game, so I'm keeping them around.

If you could also pick up a cheap monitor that will doo 1024x768, you can have dual displays, which is very usefull. :)

It would be a waste, unfortunately.

If one had a slower system (Pentium, Pentium II-class) they could be worth it to slap together a cheap and dirty system.

And to think these things were going for $299 or so three years ago, but 3 years is a long time in this business. I bought a BestData Arcade FX II V2 SLI two years ago for $250 for both. I even bought the V2 Stealth coolers for both of them and oc'd them to 103 Mhz clock.

Look what one can get for that much Jack nowadays! I still use it b/c at least its fill rate is still decent and comparable to a V3 3500. It can still run games but if you have a GF (anything), I wouldn't recommend it. You'd just be wasting an extra PCI slot.

A V2 SLI is also great for the Ultra HLE w/c is an N64 emulator. It can run Zelda 64, Mario 64, StarFox 64 like no real N64 could! Of course, you don't want to do that right?

The author is making the next version of Ultra HLE to work with OpenGl, so I may soon retire these bad boys.

If one stills plays Tomb Raider (1), I found out that the 3D-accelerated *.exe version can run only on a V1 or V2 board but not on a V3. I've searched everywhere and no executable will do it.

A lot of people new to computers ask 'why' add-on 3D cards were ever introduced in the first place. They ask if the 2D/3D boards back then were any good. Now that's something to talk about.

Well, maybe not really.

Apparently Deus Ex doesn't work well with non-3dfx cards. It's an Unreal based game so that's to be expected. I have a V3 so I haven't seen this personally, but I don't know how well it would run on a V2.

Very cool game BTW.

Unfortunately the Voodoo2 is a 3D only card and won't support dual monitor by itself

Ok, so maybe getting the Voodoo2 was a bad idea. You have given me another interesting idea though, dual monitors.

Is it possible to have a GTS and a PCI Voodoo3 in the same system? Heck, I could even wait for the PCI Voodoo4 cards get one with a bunch of coupons. I have a spare 15 inch monitor sitting in a box doing nothing. Even though the GTS would be faster than a Voodoo3 most of the time, it would still be worth having the added desktop space. I have no experience with multiple video cards under Win98, so any info would be really helpful.

An AGP GTS should work with a PCI Voodoo3.
I used to have an AGP Voodoo3 coupled with an S3 Virge, then a Savage4, both worked fine. Just install the drivers for both video cards, go to your BIOS to set the "init graphics"(or similar setting) to "AGP" instead of the default "PCI" and Windows 98 should do the rest. When properly installed, all you need to do is to go to the display settings and enable the second display by clicking on the grayed out monitor icon, and you're all set.

Dump the Voodoo2. I had one and 2D image quality suffered due to the passthru cable. Of course you can always plug your tube into the GTS and replug when you use Glide games. Kindof a pain though.
