Any good presentations to explain 'shared' bandwidth?

episodic

Lifer
How I explain effectively to 60 + people in 20 minutes or less what eats up bandwidth in a shared environment? We have a 30mbps combined internet connection - and I'm trying to give examples of how that gets bogged down - and get people to improve their etiquette on bandwidth usage.

Thanks.

Comparisons to water hoses or other types of plumbing tend to work for a non-technical audience.

That said, trying to get people to improve their bandwidth consumption "etiquette" isn't very effective. Good luck with your presentation, though.

Yea, I was asked to do it because of my former background. I doubt it'll have much effect either. I think they wanted to 'check this off' before they start blocking out right, etc.

SBC had some great commercials ~ten years ago (I've seen them on YouTube) of a city / neighborhood that was fighting for use of the shared bandwidth ,presumed to be a cable TV Internet limitation, at least at the time. I think there were three of them, and they were all pretty funny IMO.

Search for Laurel Lane , "Web Hog", SBC commercials ...

Don't be completely theoretical, use real-world statistics off your pipe that shows what percentage of traffic types are in use during different portions of the day. If you are considering blocking something, you should already have that info.

I would definitely use a hose analogy. Or a narrow hallway or something. The narrow hallway thing reminds me of my experience in Walmart today...
