My boss's wife says her hd is completely gone. I have seen the computer myself so I don't know to what extent but she says she lost all her personal/work files.

any suggestions?
 
I would first verify that it is indeed corrupted or dead first with your own eyes. I don't trust the average person to describe their computer problem.
 
The Apple Store carries a couple of software programs. I can't remember what they're called- try the Apple online store.
