I grew up playing these on consoles...and probably the last ones i really enjoyed were on xbox360...Tales of Vesperia, and Eternal Sonata...

Love turn based, and kind of fantasy settings rather than Sci Fi, but will take any suggestions...

I'm hoping that Ni No Kuni gets a PC port at some point...Anyway, throw some at me.

Sadly, there really aren't any. Most RPG's on PC are western style (ala D&D types). There is an older game that you can get at GoG called Septerra Core that is JRPG style. It's ok, nothing great, and if I remember correctly it is on the sci-fi side.

If you want oldschoolish, there are 16-bit JRPGish type indie games you can pick up on Steam for cheap. The newest being Anodyne that is touted as being similar to the snes Zelda. There is also the Precipice of Darkness series which I really enjoyed. Most of them are not deep story long RPG's though. You also have your action RPG types that you can get such as the some of the Y's games. Y's The Oath in Felghana is pretty good.

I forgot there is The Last Remnant from Square. I haven't really played it yet to say if it's any good.

Looking for JRPGs on PC is like looking for good strategy games on a console. Sure, there might be some, but...

Your best bet by FAR, if you don't have one, is to get yourself a cheap Playstation 2. That gives you the ENTIRE excellent PS2 JRPG library, and (IMO) even more importantly, the unrivaled original Playstation library, of which the number of truly STELLAR JPRGs is practically limitless.

Barring that, I'd get yourself a decent USB SNES-style PC gamepad, and check out SNES9.x and some other emulators.

Hey, it's technically on the "PC" ... ;)

Yeah, i think i tried the last remnant and couldnt get into it...ive played star ocean and my copy bugged out near the end, but it was okay. Anyway, i kind of figured, there don't seem to be a whole lot of turn based rpgs on PC...

I always liked HOMM, and kings bounty is fun, but have been looking since then. Thanks though.

Edit: Oh, and the last two systems i've owned were xbox and xbox360, which were both very JRPG light. Dreamcast was had some pretty memorable ones though!

That's what I do, while I still have the consoles and use them if I have to, I pretty much use emulators for all my console RPG needs. Most of the time shy of a few glitches/bugs here or there, the over all experience is better due to the ability to improve the graphics (and save states can be nice too). I've played a bit with PS2 emulation, but haven't seen if it's improved much since I upgraded my system. I need to try again, I have so many PS2 games I have not even finished :p

Star Ocean is on PC? I did not know that...

Seriously tho, what he said, PS2 is probably your best bet as a RPG treasure chest. PSX is good too, however if graphics are an issue for you, you might not want to go back that far. I recently played Xenogears again and had a rough time getting over the graphics on it (granted, I considered them pretty bad even for PSX standards).

He never specifically said he wanted PC games.. (oops forgot what forum this is).

If you want good JRPGs, they'll be PS2 games. Trying to find them on the PC is impossible, simply because Japanese developers aren't that into PC gaming.

Final Fantasy 7 can be found on the pc. Unfortunately the graphics look horrible by todays standards. And technically there is final fantasy 11 but its an mmo. I wish there were more decent jrpgs, they seemed to all stop after the ps2 was done.

They remade FF 7 recently with better graphics from what I understand. Came out like September 2012 I think

I actually owned the original pc release of ff7. Ended up rebuying the console verison though. Really couldnt stand playing it on the pc. But, yeah, they did release the pc version not that long ago. No idea how good of a release it was.

Other than that, the Last Remnant is probably one of the very few released on the pc. And, i personally couldn't stand it. It does have a few fans though, here and there.

I notice someone mentioned Rectear. I've always planned on trying that one out, but never seem to get around to it.

Get a PS2.

For PC, maybe get Recettear an item shop's tale?
http://www.carpefulgur.com/recettear/about.htm

That is not really a JRPG, at least not like Tales, Final Fantasy, or other common examples.

I have the game on Steam, and it is fun, but you play a shop owner and buy/sell/craft, while displaying the things you want to sell, and haggling with customers. You can also explore dungeons, and sell the drops you get, but it's real time, and kind of generic hack and slash. Capitalism Ho!

The Last Remnant was a huge dud imo. Really strange combat consisting of unions and other unintuitive aspects. Quit playing after an hour, because it was confusing and not very much fun.

You can try Y'S origin on PC. It's more of an A-jrpg, but I thought it was pretty good.

PS: I did enjoy the last remnant on PC as well, once you get how the combat system works, it's a blast.

Sorry, "a-jrpg"?

Action RPG, which isnt really an RPG. Its an action game with stats. A STR score does not make something a role-playing game.

Other offenders include Diablo, Titan Quest, Fate, and Torchlight.
Also I guess Hellgate London.

P.S. You may sometimes hear them referred to as Hack'n'slash.

ARPGs are about as closely related to JRPGs as JRPGs are to WPRGs (in other words, just because a game has stats doesn't mean it'll play similar).

I loved last remnant, it reminded me of romancing saga to a degree with the way of how you learn weapon skills and group attacks. It's very unforgiving as well, since the way you build your character affects your attacks greatly and its very hard to "retrain" a character once you fuck up. It's also very unintuitive.

The game is definitely not your typical JRPG.

Snag a PS2 and get some JRPGs. There are countless fantastic JRPGs on the PS2/PS1, arguably some of the best games every made (FF7 comes to mind)
