I'm looking to do a complete rebuild around the end of the year. What is coming out that I should watch for?

Sorry not interested in AMD chips.
 
Well, hopefully Skylake. Lets hope it is a good improvement and not delayed. The longer we go without and solid release dates or performance leaks, the less optimistic I become. I think the platform should be a good upgrade as well, but I am not clear if it will require DDR4.

OP, what do you have now?

Just wondering, what's your current rig? If it's Sandy Bridge or later, no need to upgrade until 2020 if you're looking for some noticeable performance improvement. If you're looking to upgrade I/O ports or lower TDP, might be worth considering though. Or get an 8 core Intel HEDT or AMD Zen CPU.
 
Who knows? I thought the last roadmap I saw showed skylake-K coming out at the same time as skylake-S. Intel's roadmap is such a mess now, really confusing.
 
We'll be lucky to see Broadwell-K this year. Probably looking at Skylake in 2016.

Intel can't produce a high speed quad core on their shitty 14nm process thus far. No engineering samples, nothing.

Refuse to believe they were able to stop ANY leaks about desktop quad core Broadwell/Skylake parts thus far.

USB3 ports on cards. SATA III ports on cards. I think I saw a card or two that combined them. You can get an SSD. We have an old machine from 2008 that rocks with a SATA II connection to an SSD. I build machines for fun, or I might have kept my Lynnfield. There was nothing wrong with it. Actually, my kid still uses it, with an SSD.
 
Agreed I just added a cheap ssd and it rocks. I'm thinking of moving this PC to replace a problematic AMD machine the wife uses and I the itch to build again.

Well, since you are coming from a 45 nm Core2, Skylake will be a nice jump in performance (especially MT) so long SKL-S/K can be produced at high clock rates (which we can' be 100% sure of yet). According to official info from Intel, it's still slated for 2H15 (the rumor mill abounds with predictions of delays).

Well, itching to build again is an excuse all to itself. No other justification is needed. I am writing this on an i7 4770k machine running win7-64 @ 4.3GHz. My heatsink testing rig, a Devil's Canyon i7 4970k in the basement, runs Win 8.1 @4.5GHz. It has an app that recreates gadgets, and another that puts back the Win 7 shell. That said, the Win 8.1 machine just feels faster. They'll both get Win 10 when that comes on line, but for now the OS does make a difference.

You can build now, or wait 6 months to see if there is a Broadwell desktop. But the Israeli chips (SB, HW) seem to be having better luck these days than the alternate chips (IB, BW). So either bite now or wait for Skylake -- but you might wait a year or so.

Someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, here. But I agree with you when it comes to not getting rid of good iron.

Wasn't Broadwell desktop only going up to 65W versions? I thought I read that somewhere. I wonder if it will be called i7-5770k or if Skylake will take those #s.
 
Yea, that was the roadmap I saw, but unlocked 65 watts makes no sense, especially since Skylake supposedly goes to 95 watts. I cant imagine that a 65w Broadwell K is faster than a 4790k, except for the IGP. Maybe it is meant for Brix/Steambox/SFF. But personally, I doubt we are going to see it at all.

Broadwell desktop was cancelled, except for the Iris Pro chips. It will be 65w just like Haswell Iris Pro, but will be unlocked and socketed.

Its on the roadmap to launch just barelly before Skylake. This probably indicates that Skylake Iris Pro(GT4) for desktop won't be released in 2015.

Nice, but do i read that right that it has a mobile gpu? Not sure the steam machines are worth it really, depending on price. Why give up the functionality of windows unless it is a lot cheaper? After all, its not like you cant build a SFF pc or buy one from a boutique builder and hook it to a tv. And with DX12 coming I doubt it will offer much performance advantage over windows.

These things are going to be a lot smaller than an equivalently specced ITX HTPC. Look at the Dell Steambox- a Haswell i3/i5 with a 750ti level GPU, in a box a third the size of any home built equivalent.

But yeah, I still don't see the value in putting Steam OS on the things. I would take Windows 8.1/10 any day of the week.
