Any good games that will meet these criteria?

Hey. I recently got a new computer and I'm looking for some new games to play. I've searched a bit around, but I'm unable to anything good. Maybe it's because my google foo sucks, maybe it's because my criteria are a bit too strict. Anyway, now I come to you, in search for the right game. I hope you can help me.

These are my criteria for the game(s):
  • I should be able to play with my friends. We like to sit around and play together, as we live together on campus. However, I should also be able to play on my own, to get better or if I just want to grind a bit when I'm a home.
  • The game should preferably have some kind of progression across sessions, levels, unlocks or something like that.
  • We should be able to play it whenever we want and have some fun right away. We don't have a lot of time to play each week, so big heavy MMORPGs like WOW probably isn't an option.
  • It shouldn't be a MOBA, they're too repetitive.
  • Maybe it should be open world, I don't really know. It's usually pretty fun to have a bit of freedom when playing, though.
  • This one is optional, but it would be great if the game could be played on low-medium end computers. While my new PC is pretty good, some of my friends only have their laptop with them here on campus.
  • The game should preferably be free or very cheap, since we don't have a lot of money to throw around.

I hope you can use some of what I mentioned to narrow it down a bit. Any suggestions that fit most of these criteria will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance!

You need to elaborate on "Sit together and play"

Does that mean one person playing while the rest watch and comment/spectate? If so, almost anything fits the bill.

Or do you require 4 player local multiplayer? It's gonna severely limit your options.

Sorry that I wasn't clear. I meant that we should be able to sit together in the same room (or connected with skype) playing on separate computers. The point of that criteria was that it should be online and not singleplayer :)

War Thunder
muliplayer (although you can fly on your own in a custom battle to practice but then you don't get progression xp/money)
Has levels/unlocks
Can play right away and matches don't usually take too long for arcade battles.
its not a moba
somewhat open world (you have a huge map you can fly or drive around on).
You can fly fighters, bombers, and attack aircraft so there's different gameplay options. You can also drive tanks.
lots of config options
free

diablo 3, torchlight 2, sonic all star racing transformed, borderlands 2, payday 2, CS:GO, CoD, monaco, etc.

The list is long. And easy to find.

Best party games, best coop games, best games to play with friends are all searches that would have yielded decent results.

Borderlands meets every single one of your criteria, and it has quite a few DLC's.

Payday also comes to mind, how about old emulators like Project64? I find I have the most fun playing Mario party 3 or super smash bros :D
