hey everybody

in the fall, i'm gonna be living with a few friends, and we will have to share an internet connection via a router. I was wondering what decent games are available for us to play each other over this home-network setup? Our computers are a generation old at least so cutting-edge games are out. I'm mostly lookin for FPS type games but i'm open to anything. I'm mainly interested in multiplayer fun-factor over graphics or sound etc. Oh yeah, and it would be sweet if we only had to buy one copy of the game (not necessary though).

thanks guys

Soldier of Fortune 2 is a good one, though I'm not sure about coop-play, or if you can have bots in multiplayer. Older versions of Quake and UT might work well also.

Depending on how old your computers are, you might go back to the old Rainbow Six games, since you could each lead your own team through a map to kill the terrorists or something. :)

cool thanks for the ideas. I'm mostly interested in competative play insted of cooperative. There will definatly be bragging rights and trash-talking.

yeah i was thinkin something like quake or counterstrike or something. To get an idea of our computers, mine is probably the most powerful (check out my sig)

Rune is awesome - old school melee combat and it's wicked cheap too, Rune Gold is probably less than $20.

Call of Duty has some smaller maps that are great for a few people, superb fps.

Quake 3 is good for fast paced fun, UT2k4 maps might be too much.

For RTS games, Warcraft 3 is about the best option (least complicated) if you're not used to them, with the expansion. Great fun and you can play free for all or download tower defense maps which are tons of fun if you can find the good ones :p

RPGs, Diablo 2 is still fun and starting new characters together would be a blast. Dungeon Siege and Sacred are decent too.

good good, i'm checking these out

also, i think two of us have the old counter strike games. can we play that over a local network (just those of us on the network) or do we all have to log onto the same server and play with a bunch of people?

While not a FPS, the Worms series (Worms World Party) is a blast to play on a LAN (either 1-on-1 or with teams) and really old systems should run it with no problems.

another vote for Q3

I've seen Quake 3 Arena on the "value shelves" -- jewel case only -- for $10 or less at all the major tech stores. (brag)I even picked up a couple copies at Circuit City for $2.50ea during xmas(/brag)

Also, check out "Half-Price Books" if you have one in your area -- as they usually have some decent older stuff for cheap. (but selection is random)
Also, check BigLots, if you have one of those near you....

You can try "Will Rock" too. It wasn't very popular, but it is fun if you plan on a lan. you can't really get it to run online but over the network is fine. Huge outdoor areas with tons and tons of waves of enemies. i think it has a 4 player max. you can get a nocd fix so that you dont need the cd after installing it. i have it on one of my old computers for when my nephew comes over and it runs great. P3-800E with 256mb of RAM and a 128mb Geforece FX 5700 lite version.

Comand and couqour Genrals and Warcraft 3 are great for LAN, the first Battlefield 1942 is good to if the bots work, I think the bots only work in co-op though not sure.

I tihnk I'm going to instal Battle field 1942 here on both my PC's and see if it works good, I tried it before and the bots weren't working but I went to a PC Lan place and played it in co-op and the bots worked fine.

Jedi Knight II
Jedi Academy
UT2K4
Quake 3
Mechwarrior 4
Crimson Skies

All can be played on multiple machines on your home LAN with one copy of the game. (some require the disc but keep in mind these are older games). Or pass the disc around, only required for start. Bots can be added in multiplayer in all but Crimson Skies. UT2K4 and Q3 have multiple mods out.

BF1942 and expansion packs (Secret Weapons, Road to Rome)
BFV

Both require discs to be installed, but can be any disc of the 2-4. BF1942 and expansion pack discs are cheap, especially used at EB Games B&M if you can find them used. Bots can be added for multiplayer play.

CS is probably the foundation of LAN games.

1.6 and CS:S and other mods of CS are excellent over LAN.

will that be fun with just 2 or 3 people? I think he wants older games, and they I think will have to shell out alot of money for each computer to have it's own copy.

I just installed BF 1942 and yes the bots work with CO-OP play, I used disc 1 in my computer and disc 2 in my daughters computer with a CD-key I found on the net. I payed like $10 for it used a long time ago.

I personally loved Soldier of Fortune II. What a great game - deathmatches were GREAT. I only stopped playing it on-line after BF2 game out (now it owns all my free time!). It was smooth as butter w/ my old AXP 1700+ and GeForce3 Ti200 64MB card.
