There you go

My budget was one-thousand not ten-thousand, LOL

I'd get a Canon Rebel XT, with a faster lens if I could find one. (I'd rather have a fast lens than one that has alot of versatility to it in terms of wide to telephoto.)

Just be glad you don't want a "video" camera, my roommate just dropped 7K on a camera, tripod, dolly, mic, and accesories. The camera I want to get ONLY costs $28,000 for a nice setup.

Crap just looked up how much a lens with a 1.4 f-stop is, HOLY CRAP. $429 from B&H.

OP, you need to do WAAAAAY more research before you come here asking questions. Go read up on cameras at DPReview or DCResource.

Must have a zoom? Is a 17-50mm zoom what you need, or a 55-200mm, or an 18-200mm, or a 50-500mm?

Why "MUST" you need 4GB of memory? No DSLR comes with a memory card of significant size; you buy your own memory card. Are you planning on shooting 4GB worth of photos between backups? That's risky.

Nikon D50 or Canon XT + zoom lens are the only cameras in your sub-$800 price range from the big two. I would also look at the Pentax K100D.

I'm guessing that with the Digital Rebel XT, you're going to have to go off the Canon brand to get in under budget.

Hard to know what the heck you mean by "adequate zoom". For a nice midrange, the Tamron SP 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di is a good bargain buy. Ideally you probably want the Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX HSM, but that's a pricy lens as anything of quality in that zoom range will be. If you need that sort of range but must get within budget, all I can really recommend is the Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO DG Macro which you can see is not especially fast.

Good lenses will set you back more than the camera easily. I have a 70-200 f/4 that cost me about $500. f/4 isn't exactly speedy but it's not bad either if you set the ISO to 1600.

I have a 50mm f/1.4 and a 17-40mm f/4 lens as well. I probably have about $1,600 invested in those three lenses and another $1,000 in my Canon 30D. The flash was another $350.

Canon EOS 400D. Get the 18-55 and the 55-200 lenses. That should set you back ~$1100.

Ok....

Since your budget is pretty strict, you can definitely make do with the Rebel XT (not XTi) and a Tamron 17-50mm for around $450.

Prices taken from Pricegrabber:

$520 Rebel XT Black Body

$430 Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 Canon Mount

Use the remaining $50 to get a 2GB CompactFlash Card and you'll need a reader also.

$55 2GB Sandisk Ultra II CompactFlash

The Tamron is a very sharp lens and pretty bright at f/2.8, so it's good for low light shooting. It's focusing is not that quick, so for things like fast action it won't be the best. It does not zoom out very far; at most it can do portraits, but it's not something for the zoo or wildlife or anything. If you want to get close you're probably going to have to move yourself physically. It's also decently wide for group shots.
