Any Geologists here in ATOT?? Or if your into rocks/gems help me out....

Well I'm looking for a book as a gift for someone who is into odd, or cool looking rocks. So if you know of a book you could recommend, please do. Maybe you know of a field guide that points out where to find various different rocks in Texas, or other areas of the USA.

What would be VERY awesome if there is like a nice coffee table sized book that has lots O' Picks, and also has a section that Identifies Gemstones...

lol i just asked my dad and he pulled out a whole bunch of textbooks he used in college and they all look like they're all text. lol. hes like "oh, this is a really good book, really excellent" and i flipped through it and it was like all diagrams and textbook stuff. it was called "earth" by frank press.

the rest were like research paper books and everything. thick as heck.

i told him you were looking for like picture-y kind of books with rocks and stuff. and he said he doesnt really have any, except he pulled out one from his bookshelf and holy moly, it was the exact same one chAOTIic42 recommended. it looks like one of those eyewitness books except a LOT thicker. im thinking itd fit nicely into what you're looking for. has a LOT of pictures of minerals alphabetized. he said its an excellent book to look at "beautiful minerals" and started flippin through it. i think he's still doing thagt right now while im typing :roll:

anyway, sorry i wasnt able to get much out of him, most of his books were old school textbooks, with charts and stuff. probably not what you want lol. he did say though, if you want to look at the beauty of geology, get a picture book with crystals and gemstones. he said not all minerals look nice, but crystals are just amazing to look at. i dont really know the difference but i guess...

Awww, well I appreciate it nonetheless LCM. And give my thanks to your Dad, for looking as well. I think I'll have some luck on Amazon with a bit of judicious searching.
