What wireless card are you using on the laptops ? Usually it has a signal meter installed with it.

I think I have the Netgear WG511 card (it's the 54g PCMIA wireless card), but it's at home. When I upgraded the drivers recently, I installed the Netgear monitoring software and it provides more robust information regarding the signal strength, channel, etc.

I use the same card.. you'll see a green systray icon after it's set to go / connected - double click that and you can see the signal strength meter / percentage right there. A newer version of the software (compared to what came with the card last year) is available on the netgear site.
