You may not even need an OBDII tool. On my maxima, there is a way to make it blink the ECU code with the check engine light, and then you can just look it up on a table.

Make sure it's the same kind of OBDII.

Fords use a different kind than Chevy, and Chrysler and Japanese makers use another kind. Also, some of the European makes use a different one as well.

Ahhhh... NO.
They ALL have to use the same kind, that was the whole point. My OBD2 scanner does ALL cars 96 and up.

Ahhh, don't ever talk to someone who has 10x the experience as you like that. I've made an OBDII scanner circuit from scratch. I also made a consult interface for my 300zx, and an ALDL interface circuit for my Saturn. When you do involved work like that you need to know exactly what you're doing (which you obviously do not).

If you don't know, don't open your mouth and spew garbage.

There are many scanners that have the circuitry for all the different OBDII standards, but don't spout nonsense and claim that they ALL have to use the same kind. You are wrong, and an idiot for opening your mouth.

Wow, you really know nothing about government and auto standards. I use to be ASE, owned my own shop, etc... OBD2 was a FEDERAL government spec that ALL cars 96 and later have the same port and stream style. Just because you bought a CHEAP scanner that only works on 1 type of car does not mean you know what you are talking about. If you had a REAL obd2 scanner, it will work on all 96 and newer cars/trucks.
