Make sure it's the same kind of OBDII.
Fords use a different kind than Chevy, and Chrysler and Japanese makers use another kind. Also, some of the European makes use a different one as well.

Ahhh, don't ever talk to someone who has 10x the experience as you like that. I've made an OBDII scanner circuit from scratch. I also made a consult interface for my 300zx, and an ALDL interface circuit for my Saturn.
If you don't know, don't open your mouth and spew garbage.
There are many scanners that have the circuitry for all the different OBDII standards, but don't spout nonsense and claim that they ALL have to use the same kind. You are wrong, and an idiot for opening your mouth.
