I was browsing around the forums but all i could find were threads on defrag utilites you needed to pay for. Are there any that are free?

yes. It comes with Windows. I believe that Windows XP automatically defrags while your screensaver is running as well.

My windows wont defrag for some reason, its been like that ever since i had to restore my registry when it got damaged. Nothing else has gone wrong since then though so i havent really tried to isolate why it isnt defragging, yes ive tried safe mode. So i want to try a defrag program.

Use that command line program with the following switches:
contig -s C:\*

to defrag your C: drive.

This is interesting. Does this work better than other defraggers such as the Windows Filesystem Defragger?

I've used the Contig defragmenter with good results.

Be sure and check out Power Defragmenter GUI. It's a graphical frontend for Contig (simply extract contig.exe and the GUI into the same directory)

That's a point indeed. But the one I got on my CD is version 9.0.515.

I don't know which version Windows XP uses, or if SP 2 upgrades it, but I do know that it does a great job at defrag.
