Any fisherman out there?

Where do you go? Fresh or salt water? What do you like to fish for? etc.

I just went to Cape May NJ this past weekend and we caught over 60 croakers between three of us over a 7:00 PM to 3:00 AM trip. What a blast.

Just wondered if any other ATOTers like to fish as well?

I love it. I fish mostly in Lake St. Clair which is fresh water. We like to get perch & pickerel, but there are a lot of feisty bass in there too - both smallmouth and rock bass.

Usually I'm out on one of my parents' boats... Dad's got the pontoon boat which we drift-fish in, and Mom has a 24' that we troll in. Pickerel don't normally hit when we're drifting, but throw a crank bait on there and you'll get some nice hits.

awesome. Yeah, we were fishing for croaker and weak, but the croakers were all over our clam and mackeral(sp?). Over an 8 hour trip I don't think we spent 5 minutes waiting for something to grab our line.

Where is Lake St. Clair?

Saltwater..mainly surfcast. Go for Striped(Rock) bass, good sized white perch, blues, and so on. Been going just about every weekend this summer.

I prefer surf-casting for stiped bass off the shore of MA where I live, but I also enjoy the occasional fresh water expedition.

Do you have a boat to go out on, or do you mainly fish off a dock?

I'm looking for a boat myself to go fishing in the Delaware bay. I'm just not sure what to get as I'm a first time buyer.

I do some fishing up here in Alaska when I have free time. Primarily Halibut fishing. I used to commercial fish years ago, and come from a long line of commerical fisherman so "sport" fishing doesn't really appeal to me a whole lot. Plus, when you have a freezer always stocked of salmon, halibut, and crab it really diminishes the desire to go out with a pole.

After my tuna fishing fiasco, I'm sticking with freshwater trips.

care to elaborate?

why sure. . .

Friend wanted to go fishing down by Mexico. So we (6 of us) took a 1 day trip out from San Diego.

<cue Gilligan's Island theme>
The weather started getting rough
the tiny ship was tossed. .
If not for the cou. . .
<end music>

Ok, so the ocean got rough as soon as we left the bait tanks. Then everyone on the boat started turning green - well, at least the group of guys I was with. The sea legs I thought I had, definitely were not with me on that day. So I and the majority of the 20+ fishermen on that boat headed down to sleep the rough waters until the 10 hour trip to mexico finished! 10 hours!!!!!

We get to Mexico and the announcement sounds that it's time to fish. . .So we're trolling. . .and trolling. . .and trolling. . . finally someone gets a strike! Everyone grab an anchovy and throw in your line! The guy who was trolling brings up his fish - no one else got a strike. Poles out of the water except for the trollers! More trolling. . . and trolling . . .and trolling. . . . We averaged about a strike an hour - I think a total of 5 fish were caught. Nice fish, but only 5! And one guy caught 2 of them! After about 4-5 hours of fishing it was time to head back to Cali. WTF??!! 10 hours of calm seas home. We were warned that it was way too early in the season for Yellowfin, but my friend really wanted to go.

We get back and vow never to talk about the trip again. So I will be punished with great anger that I share this tale with you.

I do both, though I mostly do salt. Since I don't have access to a boat, I mainly shore-fish - surf, jetties, bays, etc. I love to get out for some Eastern Sierra trout action, but I rarely have time anymore.

See sig.

Did you head out in winter? That's a recipe for disaster unless you're a true sailor and do 6-7 days to get far enough to warmer waters. Sorry to hear it, sounds miserable.

Try a tuna/yellowtail trip mid to late summer, great action, great fun, flat ocean. That or a trip out of Ensenada.

Saltwater fishing is my primary hobby. I live in the SF bay area so I have access to numerous amazing spots to go and fish at. In the bay, I can catch Striped bass, sturgeon and Halibut in specific seasons. Out on the rocks towards the ocean, I love to catch rockfish, cabezon, lingcod, striped bass, salmon (on piers), greenlings etc.

Next sat I'll head out to Big Sur to fish in the morning. Big Sur is an amazing place. Last time I was fishing there, a whale swam right within 30 yards of me. Sea otters, seals are abundant there as well. Pods of Dolphins are common and so are porpoises.

You guys should try fishing out in the open salty air if you live near the coast. There's not even one moment that I would give back that I've enjoyed out fishing even if I didnt catch anything.

I live about 5 minutes away from the mississippi - so I occasionally fish for walleye and catfish and what have you, but I usually go out once a week or so and fish the local trout streams around the area. I mainly use spinning tackle for the day, but if I'm camping I'll bring up my fly rod and give that a whirl once in a while.

Thats awesome. I would love to try fishing out in the West Coast. The Delaware Bay has been good to me this summer so far though. I'd like to go out on a head boat and try for some Blues. I heard they're a lot of fun to catch.

i fish for bass, using artificials (spinners and plastics).

i get around in a float tube, using ankle fins and average about 1 mile /hour.

my best day was about 30 bass in 2 hours.

always catch and release.
