Yamaha makes 'em. Iomega's new Predator drives have firewire support. I'm sure there are many others...

Or he could buy a Drive Kit. I know ADS Technologies makes one. It's called the Pyro drive kit. It allows you to put in a hard drive or CD-ROM in an enclosure that plugs into a Firewire port. I used one with my laptop for quite some time until I upgraded. I'm pretty sure newegg carries one for under $100. They also have a 12x LiteOn CDRW for under $90

I just received my Pyro Kit last week and it is fantastic... For the first time I can burn at 12x and not EVER see the buffer drop below 100% no matter what I am doing... :)

Good suggestion on the kit... FWIW, Best Buy has the 12x Buslink (Lite-on) burners this week for $89.99 - $20 MIR = $69.99, a little cheaper than Newegg at the moment. That'd give him a 12x firewire burner for about $170, whereas the Yamaha I saw was $300.
