Any fine art collectors here?

I went to an art auction during my cruise last week, it was an eye opening expeirence. People would pay tons of money for a numbered and signed "original" reprint. If I understand correctly, the original one is never/rarely sold, the artist will reprint X number of prints, and each one is numbered and signed by the artist. I guess that is as close as it get about buying the original? any serious art collectors here? I wanna learn more! Is there a dummy book for art collecting? 🙂 oh I did buy a piece at the auction for $90, and it is supposingly worth like $400.

I can't really afford to collect fine art, but I do like paintings and prints. My walls feel bare without them.

I have some odds and ends at my house we've collected over the years. Most valuable piece is an original mixed-media done by a friend of ours. He's had a bunch of stuff commissioned by Elton John since then, so I'd imagine it's pretty valuable since his stuff goes for thousands per piece these days.

ebay's good for paintings? I'm moving into my new house in september, maybe I should look into this to get some nice wallhangings. I've got a $200 tapestry of the 'cinderella castle' from germany and some Ansel Adams prints, but that's about it.

We've got a couple of Nagel originals on the wall but that's about it. I imagine they're probably worth something by now since he's dead but my wife would kick my ass if I sold them. 😛

ebay's good for paintings? I'm moving into my new house in september, maybe I should look into this to get some nice wallhangings. I've got a $200 tapestry of the 'cinderella castle' from germany and some Ansel Adams prints, but that's about it.

I generally just go check out local galleries and art shows. You can get really cool stuff for cheap if you stay away from the snooty "fine art" galleries. I think the most I've coughed up for anything thus far was a few hundred bucks.

Flea markets is another great source for good buys.

I have found tons of really nice paintings (oils) for cheap. 20-40 bucks.

Great thing about art is it's your taste - who cares who made it.

I've got a few bits and pieces, but nothing probably extraordinarily valuable. One is a series of photos of a staged "rescue" by Brigantine Beach lifeguards in 1963 that was taken by a local photographer. Got that for like $75 on Ebay, matted, framed and signed.

Another one is an original paiting of a clownfish and anemone from some artist in Key West. My parents gave that to me.

I'm more interested in nice, cheap, original works (not reprints of common famous works), even if by "noname" artists.

Oh, I also have a signed litho of The Who painted by the late John Entwistle that was sold on the 1998 tour.

Pretty much my opinion as well.

That said, I would LOVE to someday own an original Georgia O'Keeffe. My all-time favorite painter.
